Thanks Nancy, for this and your other assistance.

I am aware of the verification codes, what concerns me is the ongoing improvement in fake slabs themselves. I am worried that someone may have, as an example a 1946 penny and have advertised it For Sale. Now the culprits have an authentic cert number to work with, if they now put a lesser coin in a fake holder the number will correspond. To correctly show a 1946 Penny in the original grade.

Now of course if you can view the coin in person or with good photos you can then make your own assessment, and decide if you agree or disagree with the grading.

With a lot of auction sites the pictures are not high enough resolution to get these details. So the next best thing is to look for indicators on the actual slabs themselves.

Things such as the Font and placement of the Blue Card. Some I am seeing have the Year (TLC) Denomination (TRC)description in the middle and finally a barcode at the bottom. On closer inspection I am seeing some discrepancy with the description, varied from being in the middle and have some space, to others being almost touching the base of the Year (TLC) So is there a standard placement etc...

I am going to look over some known good slabs (Hope So) to see what I can identify. I am thinking this issue is going to get a lot worst before it gets any better.

Appreciate any tips fellow collectors can add.

Hi all, 1st post here, hoping to get a bit of help on the value of some coins I got from a deceased estate this morning. I have been searching the net for a couple of hrs researching my find and saw that a few of these pennies in the lot may be worth something. There are 3 1946 pennies but 1 really stands out as being in much nicer condition. My 1st problem is that I can't seem to get a good close up pic of them to put up here. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

The 1946 penny is the 3rd best penny (im sure, not sure if 32/21 overdate is better) anyway maybe you should make a thread on all your coins so experienced members can grade/value them, thanks

The 6 is horrible. *** Edited by Staff - This is a family friendly forum *** The coin is also upset to about 1:00/1:30. You don't really see any upset 1946 pennies. The A's are also a definite give-away, but in many cases a lot of people will believe that it's genuine because it is slabbed...that's the problem especially in on-line sales. People don't take decent photo's. It's even worse with banknotes. Throw a banknote in a scanner & miraculously many creases seem to vanish. It's all about high quality macro images or I won't bid. You can't trust a lot of the sellers on ebay.

Always buy from a respected dealer. sure you pay more, but with a peace of mind. Why do people buy expensive things from ebay anyway?

Looks like a modern Chinese fake to me. Have seen similar pictures in a recent edition of the
Australiasian Coin & Banknote Magazine.

I know that the fakes are out there all the time , But how long have the cheeky buggers been putting them in fake slabs.
These are bound to dupe a lot of buyers

Thanks for the help guys, I don't have a scanner so I tried to take some pics of the nicer 46 penny. I'll try load them on a new thread for comment.

I've noticed a lot of mistrust of ebay on this forum. People buy expensive things from ebay because they can get them for half the price of a respected dealer. All you need to do is some homework and the risk is minimal.

For instance, take the fake 1946 Penny in the opening post. All you need to do is google a 1946 Penny to see what a real one looks like

When you compare the date on the coins (in particular the weak "19" and strong "46" on the genuine coin) it is clear that the slabbed coin is one to avoid.

I buy a lot of coins on ebay, some of them quite expensive, but I have a set of rules that I follow.

- always compare the coin to a picture of a known genuine coin.
- never trust the grading given by the seller
- only buy expensive coins from sellers with good feedback and preferably ones you have bought from before.

So by doing some homework and using some commonsense I've saved probably 30% to 40% on the cost of my collection.

Hi All, I'm new here. I'm reviving this topic as I stumbled upon it as I was researching a 1946 coin I bought on ebay 2 days ago. Its exactly the same coin that WWWWW said he sold for $7500 in 2010. I bought it for $1270. I cant email WWWWW. So I'm hoping I would be contacted by him. Just wondering why it sold for so much 8 years ago.

wwww would be Walter Eigner, runs Numisbid in Australia, so you might be able to contact him there. As for the drop in price... a big drop but then most coins (and banknotes) have dropped somewhat and some have dropped more than 80%.

nealeffendi....thank you very much for your reply. I will shoot him an email. I wonder if its the way the mint has been pumping out meaningless coins in the last few decades that has influenced the prices in the collector market. Shame really.

Well I saw a PCCB slabbed coin 1946 proof, sold on a auction site for 950ish I didn't know whether to cry or laugh at this.

Its very obvious that the PCGS is a fake I wonder how much it worth even fake.

On sort of a side note I know that some contemporary fakes are collectable, but there was this dumb lady (another customer) in a collectable shop who though fakes were worth more than the real thing ....
