Horrible yes, but a litle back story. Imagine yourself back in the late 1800's early 1900's. Your daughter wants a bracelet because the kid down the street just got one. You have very little money to spend on a piece of jewelry for a seven year old so you get creative. A handful of pocket change ends up as a bracelet no biggie.

I don't think anyone back then was thinking "What will this Half Dime be worth in 120 years?"

Anyhow, it's sad from a numismatic point of view, but also kinda endearing from a human perspective.

This is scary. This only makes problem free examples cost more money. They had a low mintage already, but how many have survived that still have good eye appeal?

It is kind of amazing that a little hole makes them practically worthless and unappealing.
If those didn't have holes everybody would be like

So the pawn business brings me a lot of interesting/weird things.

You got that right! My father owns a pawn store, so I work for him occasionally on the side. It's an interesting business. You never know what is going to come through the door next.

Somebody out there will give those coins the love they deserve! LOL!
I've seen holed sets that are actually pretty neat looking!

We must organize a search party & hunt the culprit down. Then shoot him/her. Just kidding

Or at least punch a hole in them

i have an 1866 Half Dime that suffered the same fate, I wouldnt have sold it for melt, but it would look much better without the hole.

All those holes is a depressing sight. I admit to owning some holed coins. I was able to get them for so cheap due to the holes. I try not to mind the holes. Some aren't too bad. It all depends on where they were drilled in reference to the devices on the coin.

Ehh, I dunno, it doesn't bother me that much. I think they'd make great fodder for a necklace or bracelet! =) Since it's been done already, might as well put them to use in a way that they'll be somehow appreciated by somebody.

Bummer!! I'd still love to have them in my collection... Maybe they could fill some holes? Eh?

I agree with delaner. I would snap them up at or about melt and make a nice necklace or bracelet for my daughter. I think she would really enjoy that as well.

I like the holed coins. Yes, it takes away most of the value but it is part of history.
