Thanks coppercoins. I wasn't meaning to question you, just wondering how it could be done.

Punched and hammered, from the looks of the PMD on the obverse.

Whats neat about these type of coins with holes on them. I'm not saying yours is or not but a person would wear a coin as a necklace as a resemblance like birthdate, Anniversay, etc.... Usually them types of holes are done by jewelers. Every once in a while someone does it themselves and they look like that. The real reason the holes is in the coin I guess well never know.

Note on the 51 cent that the holes at 3+6 were punched from the reverse, 9+12 from the obverse.

Maybe a WW1 vet wore it in remembrance of the armistice with Germany 11/11/1918.

I like these guesses. I'll take some better pictures tonight. The hole is so tiny I'm not sure if it could've been used for a necklace, Maybe it started out as a necklace then the person needed money so they spent it.

What-Is-This-Hole-Called?

I guess maybe someone placed a small pointed object on it and hit it with a hammer since the rim also looks damaged.

the holes in the Large Cent that cdn44fan posted was done with old square nails. People used to nail Large Cents on their houses or barns door frame for good luck back when these coins were circulating and back then most of the nails were square instead of round like most are today

THAT piece of information on damage is actually very interesting! And makes perfect sense. I've seen the square holes and never considered...I also recall hearing about the good luck stigma- now 2 and 2 have come together. Thanks Bryan!
