I sent the seller an email asking 'why so shiny?' I specifically asked him if it was plated and/or polished. His reply (in all caps) was ONLY POLISHED. so there you have it (I guess)

Thanks for posting the image! Yes, looks pretty -- awful. :) Almost as if the piece had been lacquered. Would not call that condition nice ...

Well, when I was young (stopped that since them :D) - I used to clean copper coins with coper cleaning tissue - they would look exactly like that. I suppose that's what he did, I actually liked that look then (I since then learned that it meant removing history and surface from the coin, which is bad)
I actually did worse by then, cleaning coins with hard cleaning powder (hairlines and so on) - hopefully only a few got that ... looting ... (yeah, I liked cleaning ... then ...)

NB : maybe the reason why his prices are high (can't see the coins, french law forbid us to see those stuffs with swatziskas ...) - is that some peoples collecting artifacts from this german era just don't care about the coin itself, but about the symbols they represent.

you may be right but I suspect people think that they are uncirculated since these actually have some pretty good detail left

This coin has been cleaned as well (although it have way more details) - old copper just don't look like that (it should be like cent coins) As for the color, saw the picture ... a well cleaned coin with a nice light could give that out - although not for pure copper. The coins I was referring to are bronze alloy coins - like this one : http://www.lutecediffusion.fr/piece...59&cid=0&v=1If those pfenig are in pure copper (orange / pink colored) - then that coin has been plated ...

When I saw the first image, I thought it was a great looking coin. Then I saw the obviously polished reverse, and took another look. Nicks on a ms coin don't look like that.

I saw a flea market dealer who had thousands of coins, and almost everything was buffed--pages of identical color cents, etc.
I asked why he did that, he said his customers like them that way.
Back when GSA cc dollars were released, toning was an automatic reject from the $30 ones to the $15 pile.
It makes sense not to anything to a collectable that can't be undone, but tastes are different, and change over time.
