Toning come from exposure to air. Check them, put them back, and it should be no problem.

As far as I know, The mint doesn't actually seal the tube with tape (this is true for Maples from the RCM at least) and sellers are the ones that tape them saying they are sealed from the mint, either with shrink wrap or tape. I know APMEX does this, and they charge more for tubes straight out of the monster box, unsearched, etc. The tubes cost more than if you were to buy 25 individual ones.

So unless you paid a big premium for unopened tube, I would open them and check.

Thanks for the replies.

the seller seemed like a new seller, relatively low feedback, but all positice, and mainly dealing with coins.

I took the coins out to take a look. They, look pretty new, 2011, and seem to have a good weight to them. I will get them weighed today but they look pretty good.

ebay is also having something called ebay bucks, so I already got these for a decent price, with about 15$ in ebay bucks. So I was thinking about just buying some airtite cases to put them in.

Thanks for the quick replies!

definitely glad you opened them to make sure there was 20 in there. Unless it was from a monster box, I'd open rolls just to double check

Everytime I get new coins I always have them sittng in front of me on my desk, I usually keep them there for a about a week or two to admire then store them away not to be seen in years. I notice that they start to get a little "color" after 10 days or so. So you don't have to worry about toning if you just take them out for a few minutes or hours to check them out.

Also, if you haven't already be sure to pick up a digital scale so you can weigh all of your coins. You can pick up a nice one for 20 -30 bucks easy even less if you just get one that weighs to the tenth of a gram. But if you can get one that weighs to the hundredth.

Thanks for all the replies!

I borrowed a buddies and it had a troy ounce measurement setting. All the coins weighed from 1.0 to 1.01 troy ounces. This was a smaller cheaper scale that only goes to tenths. But I am sure they are all real now!

I need to get some cotton gloves though. I actually used a new unused cotton white tshirt to handle the coins. Haha

It does feel good to have a stack of nice shiny 2011 eagles!

I purchased a roll of 2006 Silver Eagles off of ebay as well. The very first thing I wanted to do is crack open the tube and check them out. They all weighed correctly and have a beautiful ring to them.

I personally want to take each coin and seal them in an air tight, direct fit holder. I feel this is the best way to protect them. Does anyone have an opinion on doing this?

Also, 16 of the 20 coins have an interesting mark just left of the third sun ray from the L. Each mark is identical and almost looks as if the die was contaminated and left this small, shiny dot. Could this be considered a mint error? Add or subtract any value from the coin?

BTW, the tube, after I took the tape off weighed 43.2g on my digital scale. So far this scale has been accurate within 0.1g. However, I could not weight the tube with the coins in it as it weighed too much for my 600g scale.

If you want your new silver coins to stay nice and shiny, just carefully take them out of the mint tube and rub them gently with an automotive anti-fog cloth. Handle the coins by the edges or with thin cotton gloves to protect them. This will put a very thin layer of silicone grease on them, which protects the silver from air. No air contact, no oxidation. No oxidation, no toning.

most of the tubes from the "green monster" (what everyone calls the big case these tubes full of ASE's come in) that I have seen has tape to hold the lid on. The Green Monsters have 25 of those tubes (500 coins) in a big green box, I do not see anyone selling any green monsters right now that still has coins in them but you can see what they look like here (the coins have been taken out so no tape on the tubes) http://cgi.ebay.com/Green-Monster-B...em1c160d1fca
This is what they look like when you get them directly from the mint http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...PWJQgUo%253D

That's a heck of a premium, considering there are only 20 in a roll.

Maple Leafs are 25 to a roll, that's what he was referring to, a small premium.

I've always seen rolls taped, usuall fiber reinforced.

Those green lids don't stay closed worth diddly.

First off, not opening a roll of coins would be like a like not opening his/her presents at Christmas, and that just ain't right, lol....

The other night my girlfriend said I was mumbling something in my sleep like.... "Get back, my green monster, 500 ASE's strong!", then I woke up in a cold sweat....
