Depends on whether it's corrosion or not. Maybe post bigger pics? If it's just gunk you could dip it in Acetone.

Nothing to loose.

Go to Lowe's and get Acetone and Xylene (Xylol). Both are on the paint aisle. Rinse the coin in distilled water, pat it dry on a rag, dip it in a bath of acetone (I use a rubber glove and kind of pinch/pat it while in the bath). Then rinse in water, pat dry, dip in bath of xylene, then give it a final water rinse and pat try.

Acetone and Xylene are organic solvents, so they will break up gunk, paint, etc. without hurting the coin. They usually work in about half a minute, though if that gunk is really paint, it might take longer to work.

If that stuff is corrosion, I don't know if Verdi-Gone will help nickels.

Not in a coin shop.
At a Home Depot or Lowe's or a hardware store.
BETTER BE CAREFUL!
Acetone is a HAZARDOUS MATERIAL!

Take proper precautions, read and adhere to warnings on the container. Use safely as directed. Not kid stuff!

Do you have a Walgreens nearby? You can get acetone at most drug stores. Just go to the cosmetics aisle. It's nail polish remover. Just get the 100% Pure type, you don't want any extra chemicals in it. Xylene (Xylol) is paint stripper. You get that at the hardware store. You need to be well-ventilated to use that. Follow the safety instructions on the can, meticulously. This is the thing that makes house painters "punchy." The fumes, themselves, are toxic.

I'm not punchy. And I paint houses, but do as others have said. I would suggest you use it outdoors if possible.

Didn't mean anything personal, Brett. The vapors will cause brain damage if inhaled, though, and it's pretty common knowledge that's one of the hazards of that trade.

I sprayed houses for 25 yrs; and the effects can be IMMEDIATE! I sprayed a holding tank at the Biosphere, which demanded to be cut with zylene, respirators weren't enough. An oxegyn supply was needed.

We don't spray anything where I work. We have gone to zero/low VOC paint, odorless paint thinner, Nitrile gloves. Anything that is more friendly to me is better.

And I knew you meant nothing personal about it.

To the OP, Just be careful with any chemical you decide to use.

Nail polish remover has the extra chemicals in it. You do NOT want that type. If you're going to get acetone, get it from the hardware store (Lowe's, as already suggested, or Home Depot, or your local Ace or what have you.. ) Just make sure it says "100% pure acetone", but even then, brand quality varies.

Proper ventilation is also required for acetone, not just xylene - that and keeping it away from open flame, as it is highly flammable. Just putting it out there again as there seems to be some confusion.
