I think Jaobler naid it. By seeing the coin in hand, deffenatly could tell between AU and MS.

.98 - REALLY? If anyone sees where the damage is, please point it out to me!
On another note, I submitted three additional coins with it and 1949S Franklin: cleaned, 1956 Franklin MS63 FBL (yeah!), and 1964D Dime MS 64 (it was my dad's, had to do it).
So, if anyone can tell me where they see damage on this coin, please let me know because I am scratching my head. Boo!

it looks like it might be bent, or that they didnt like the lack of rim at aboit 3 o-clock

Damage  Now that I'm looking for damage I do see what looks like a rectangular dent or punch mark on the obverse star near its lower right edge (about the 5:00 position). The right obverse rim at about 3:30 has a wavy look but that seems very minor. I'd guess it is that dent but you never know with PCGS. Sometimes they seem to downgrade coins for imaginary problems! |

Thanks for the opinions. My picture taking is bad - the rim around 3:30 is weak but straight and the coin is straight as well (I checked due to so many of them being bent). I am thinking is may be that mark. I have e-mailed them to find out why they gave it that designation - do you think they will respond.
My stubborn streak is coming out here - depending on how they respond, I may pull it from the slab and have a large dealer submit it to see how it is graded. I have looked at so many of these slabbed I can't believe they would call this damaged!

according to the pictures I do not see anything that would have me call this coin damaged but both them and you have an advantage over us by being able to see the coin in hand. if I were to give a grade on thee pictures I would say probably AU-58 with a shot at MS on it because it looks beautiful to me. But again I am just judging the coin by the pictures provided and I know how hard these tiny things can be to take a picture of

I would agree with an AU58 but only as a max.
Slight but still there, rub wear. Seeing as all coins have been cleaned to one extent or another :) It may net a 53/55.

My pictures really do not do it justice. If anything, I thought it might come back as cleaned since the toning on it is so minor. I could have lived with that. But I have seen many 3 cent silvers in hand and this one was comparable to those that had a grade between 58 and low 60's. Plus I checked to make sure it was not bent. I am holding up the BS paddle on the .98 ruling.

Looking back at your post, this would be the one as soon as you got your coin back, I'd say - is the .98 some sort of grade, or rejection? Thanks, Jack |

Hi Jack! .98 is PCGS's code for damage, .92 is for cleaning. I would have understood .92 but .98 is really silly.

Oh, and their response to me:
"Each grader operates independently and without knowledge of any other grader's opinions. Each grader records the results of their grading in our computer system which utilizes time-tested rules based logic to determine and track each coin's grade. After each coin has been graded by the graders it is reviewed and the grade is finalized by one of our most senior experts. In the opinion of our grading staff this coin is genuine, but could not be graded according to our standards."
Sounds like a computer generated script. Too bad, this coin will not stay in this holder but rejoin it's compadre's in the intercept shield 2x2's I have them in! Glad they could at least agree it is genuine...

And finally, if you are wondering (most probably not), why I am so adamant about this coin not staying in this holder. I never plan on selling my coins but to leave them to my son. At age 11, it is tough to know if he will want to continue with this or not. Should he decide to sell them (and I would want him to if he does not have enjoyment from them), I do not want him ripped off when I believe a mistake has been made with the coin by a TPG. Right or wrong, this little guy will go back to it's original holder with it's friends! Edited by CoinsKelly

Well... In the second picture, there are hints of greenish yellow on the bottom half. In the top picture, from 4-to-5 o'clock, there appears to be a dark spot. It might just be the lighting in the picture, but is it possible this is PVC damage?

No, it is my poor picture taking. There are no spots on it and the second picture does not reflect the color.
