Silverhawk74...This silver rise is really making nice medals like that too expensive for a lot of people...It nice that my collection has risen dramatically,But,at the same time, sad because its getting harder to add some of the stuff I've been looking for

I feel you Frazzel, as that is a high priced coin and if I had that much to spend, I would be tempted to get a nice 1/10th gold coin or something. I am like you, why not go for the sterling 27 gram coins with the cool themes, or I like the Liberia 20 gram silver coins, and you can still find them on ebay just under 40 total. A way to keep stacking and adding to the total without paying to much, but those are even better at just 4 grams short of a true troy oz.... And I agree about the Franklin mint sterling, as I think it has a unique look to it, like in the dark area of the coin, via the space, would a pitted like texture be accurate....

I really like a lot of the stuff the Franklin Mint did,too bad its considered junk by a lot of people I bought a Franklin Mint medal in celebration of the founding of the American Red Cross. I like the medal so much I bought a second one as a gift.

I agree with Frazzle, I sort through ebay auctions looking for a buy at or below melt and have come out surprisingly well. My latest buy was a ebay purchase of a 1976 Swedish 50 kroner coin at .925 fineness, .8029 ASW. At silvers closing price of $47.94 the value of the coin sits at $38.49. I paid $23.99 at a Buy it now auction, with the seller having quite a excellent feedback rating! Deals can be had.

Very nice medal. I'm tempted as the moon walks were one of the coolest parts of my childhood. It reminds me of when we were considered a great nation by the rest of the world.

Great medal! Last time I looked, a collection is something near and dear to YOUR heart. Who cares if some insignificant little so and so doesn't like it. Believe me gang, there a lots of collectors out there with all kind of different tokens and medals. To each his own. AS an example: I'm not fond of "Horse Blankets", my friend in Independence, MO loves them. He brought a bunch over one day and completely wowed me with a little after dinner presentation while our wives immediately went somewhere else. I even tried to buy one because it was encased in Lucite. (I know, I can hear you currency collectors moaning...his mom did that thinking it would keep forever) It would have been great in my paperweight collection!

Scored another good buy on ebay this morning. A 1973 Austria 50 schilling at .900 fineness and .5787 ASW. Paid $20.30, current silver value at $27.87. The deals are out there, just need to look. Happy hunting everyone!

Quote: I was gonna start a new thread called Apollo 11, as I found this amazing 4.7 oz silver raised coin... - Silverhawk That's a nice one too but it is too bad that they did not include the silver purity and weight somewhere on it. I'm sure that there is some kind of info that is printed on paper that comes with such things but I really like seeing it ON the coin or medallion itself. Yeah, I'm one of those guys who, in the old days, would bite a coin to see if it was really made of a soft metal like gold or silver.

Sterling silver medals and coins offer some very good buying opportunities right now. For some reason .925 sterling silver is not popular (yet) and many don't deal with it. The Franklin Mint items are often not marked for content and that can hurt when selling but the silver ones are .925 fine silver.

Many do not. It's kind of funny to think about sometimes too. This piece was made by the Franklin Mint in 1967. It is a sterling silver art round that weighs about 27 grams total, so the round contains about 0.80 troy ounces of pure silver. When it was made in 1967 that was about $1.25 worth of silver! They probably figured it wasn't worth marking!

Plus, those who are in constant contact with silver items usually recognize the various kinds for what they are where the rest of us might not. That was some price! Ah, the good old days.
