Do the workers go without pay when off on strike?

They get strike pay from the union and then they try and negotiate back pay (while they were on strike) into any agreement. Sometimes they get it, sometimes they don't.

That ought to be illegal for government and crown corp.

Well, thought I should pop in and mention that I haven't seen or heard anything else about mail strike, so as far as I know, mail delivery is still happening ;)

Aaaargh! Guess I spoke too soon

Seems there could still be a strike after all. It looks like they have to give a 72 hour strike notice, and there hasn't been one as yet, so ... wait and see I suppose.

So, I wonder how many of you are holding on to mail destined to or from Canada, just waiting and waiting until you know it's safe to send?

Canada Post served the 72 hour notice to strike on Thursday night @ 11:59 so unless something changes before Friday, snail mail will be on strike starting this coming Friday!

Sigh... according to the stats, there's 17 per cent less mail to deliver over the last five years, but the union wants more staff and doesn't want to hire new people at a lower wage.

They are also asking for 11% in wages over the next four years (that's fine, everyone should get a raise to track inflation and so on) but won't move on their massively out of date sick time issue.

I hope the strike is long and they get hammered hard. All major couriers stop at my house, so the larger transactions will continue.

They have created a site to post their official updates but won't say much as per the usual Government standard.

It will/would be an inconvenience (I have auctions closing tonight!), but that's it. I agree with the sentiment to make them suffer and see if maybe they can begin living in reality.

Just finished talking to the Post Office, and the word is out that the Winnipeg Post Office will close its doors at 9:00PM, their time. Not looking good.

I know in the Vancouve area that you can make arrangments with 2 or 3 companies in Point Roberts WA that accept packages on your behalf for a fee.... costs me $3 for anything under 15lbs.. send to their address in my name and they will keep for up to 2 weeks before they charge me extra... saves on shipping many times already and I get US sent packages in 3 days instead of 3 weeks or more like it takes now. I assume there are similar companies all along the border where there are major centers. Worth having a look for this type of service if you live fairly close to the US and buy items from there or ship to there.

Deluded idiots. And apparently exponentially lazy too.

Union members are much like public company executives. It's all "me and now". They don't care about (or are massively ignorant how their demands affect) the long term viability of the business. And for a long time the executive give in to union demands because revenue losses jeopardize their bonuses and stock options.

Ultimately, the behaviour dooms a company. Competitors with more reasonable cost structures swoop in and take over increasing amounts of the business. Ultimately, the company is doomed to fail.

My Dad and I were talking about the ultimate doom of GM over 30 years ago, based on how quickly they always gave into striking Ste. Therese (Quebec) workers who went on strike like clockwork.

It seems that they're doing a "rolling strike" rather than the whole system stops across the country. Rolling strike looks like first one place strikes for a few days only then another community, then another, and so on, so mail is still moving apparently. Last I heard was Halifax was on strike for 48 hours then ... I don't know where next, or where it is now.
