Isn't someone on this board creating a database program to inventory coins? I thought he started a thread. I need to inventory as well but I would like to have pictures as well not just a line item. Ugg, inventory with pictures is so time consuming.

NOHOPE and his Layaway trading list experiment web page, think of how much inventory he has to upload to his page. Makes his effort to bring joy to coin collectors even more awe inspiring.

My primary tool is also a spreadsheet. I have tried a couple of database tools, but usually go back to the spreadsheet for ease of entry.

I recently purchased coinmanage2011. Without a doubt the bst way to go if your willing to fork over the 50$. It makes organizing extremely si,ple and effortless.

Quote: Is there something you suggest or prefer to inventory your coins accurately This comes up frequently and usually always the same. Excel. However, you added that "ACCURATELY" thing. That is where things get tuff. I say that since the more info you put per coin, the longer and more complicated the thing becomes. Also, as your collection grows, again more amd more complications. That word accurately would indicate someone would want complete details of every coin and as your collection grows to thousands of coins, this would be monumetal. A long, long time ago I started with all sorts of info for an Excel spreadsheet but by the time my collection grew into thousands, many details became a waste of time. For example why would anyone want to know when and where you purchased a coin 25 years ago? I still use an Excel spreadsheet but now down to real basics and at times that too becomes excessive.

Thank you carl and thanks all for the info. The main reason I plan on doing this is because I do not want my wife to be bamboozled if I have an untimely demise. I think I will simple put a number on each 2x2 I have and list them accordingly. I think I will also reference many websites and book to use for valuing. The biggest weapon in my arsenal though is HERE~! The first thing I will put on my excel is this website my user name and password and tell her to get on here and start asking questions. I do not think my collection is huge or worth anything over 25K, but I am only 26 years old and plan to collect the rest of my life. This will hopefully insure I have a good way to look up my own coins and also a tool for my family to use. Thanks to all the responses.

I guess I'm the odd duck, I use MS Access (database). It's not the on-line version being developed by someone else on the forum. Mine resides locally and I love it! Right now, it only includes US coins (not US currency or Canadian coins or currency) and I have many queries developed to display various aspects of my collection, Type Set, Lincoln, Mint Sets, Jeffersons, coins to upgrade, etc. Once I develop the table, any number of reports and views are easily available. Right now I have around 2000 records (ie coins).

Another free option is LibreOffice - http://www.libreoffice.org/Will be interesting to see what happens with OpenOffice now that Oracle has turned OpenOffice over to the Apache Software Foundation.

LibreOffice is actually a fork of OpenOffice. It came to be because of Oracle's not-so-benevolent control over OpenOffice.
Once I resolve my one remaining software issue with Ubuntu 11.4 Natty Narwhal (I am still running 10.10 Maverick Meerkat on my non-test boxes), I will be using LibreOffice as well (as that has been bundled with 11.4).

I have not got enough post to post a link. So I'll try and not break any rules. My brother has put together a complete spread sheet from 1859 threw 2011. Each year has grade columes, and has rolls for each mint mark. penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half, and dollar. I have used many different softwares and this is the most simple easy spread sheet I have ever used. Now how can I get you to where it is? If you google (quikcheck coin)This is the spread sheet. He came up on the second topic. His name is Jim Bingle and you will see his name in the topic, with quick check. If any questions notify me. I am not doing this to promote this. It is the best spread sheet I have ever seen. Thanks Big Ed

Now that is an intesting idea. Never thought of that one but it is a smart thing to do. Instead of some relative going to coin stores or whatever, have them come here for info on what is what. Good idea.

Quote: I have not got enough post to post a link. Send your link to us via the 'Send note to staff' link (in the lower right of each post) so we can take a look at it. If we find that it is okay (for example, the destination is not riddled with inappropriate material) we could allow it.
