Hi everyone, Just thought I would report back on this coin. This is indeed a fake, it is slightly overweight and on closer inspection a friend pointed out that someone has had a go at the rim with a file/intrument to try and reduce the weight of the coin. I got my refund today and have had an important learning experience. Cheers

These coins have shot through the roof, value wise, in the past couple of years. With hindsight I should have stocked up ...

I have not collected coins for long, but totally agree. My friend has a lot of Chinese coins, all in good condition and legit. He is surprised at the current value of his collection.

I think I know something about fat man, although I'm not an expert. From these two photos, it looks real to me. But a photo really in need is the close-up photo for the rim. In China, people won't buy a fat man online if the seller doesn't provide a clear photo about the rim. Unless, the coin is slabbed. The rims are hardest to imitate. It is the last thing for many people to rely on.

That fake is much better than average - the slight unevenness int he Rim is the only immediate alarm bell but it isn't the easiest to see. Glad you got a refund without problem. With the pre-republic Chinese Dollar sized coins, even weight is un-reliable as it has been known to vary a little.
epop - The 1933 Junk from that link is still at NGC - due a grade any day now, fingers crossed!

Sorry Jeff I didn't get it as English is not my mother language. What's the grade that NGC gives you for that special coin? Lastly I start to have an interest also in Chinese coins.I send the KM#102 as you advise me,and I wait the grade this week.

I honestly thought it was a good example of a fat man, my first Chinese coin purchase. The coin was in great condition on first inspection, we checked Krause... the weight for this coin should be 26.4g. The one above has very little wear, but weighed 27.02g a coin will lose weight with wear, but not gain it. Then although the rim felt right you could see (with help!) that the edge of the rim had been taken out in places. We thought this was done to reduce the weight of the coin. As my first identified counterfeit I didn't feel good and haven't replaced this coin yet (i will do eventually). Got a fake 1911 Trade dollar last week, again returned and refunded via the popular auction site.

Epop - no grade has been received yet, I am waiting for it to arrive back from NGC....should hopefully not be too much longer to wait. Also Good luck with your coin, I hope it grades highly. Mohur - I may be able to help you with the Fat Man dollar and a Trade dollar. I have several of each available, including some NGC graded Trade dollars I should have in hand very soon. PM me if you would like details.
