Is it a poor strike? I think so. Look at the stars in the flag. Relativly clean fields. MS-62 or MS-63 with poor strike.

weakly struck it seems. Has to be better than AU, I'd say MS. Its not worth that much right? If so, keep it in a 2x2 and enjoy it. I love wlhs!

AU-50? nah. Full luster, not many marks. Weak striking on eagle is typical. This is at least a solid 64+

Would a grading company grade at 64 with this weak of a strike?

muddler stranger things have been known to happen.

Heres my Two Cents. I think the weak strike was intentional. The die is in the late die state. You can tell from the large die break on the reverse. I think the mint worker was trying to eek out just a few extra coins to make his numbers. So he adjusted the stamper (I like that word stamper) a little bit higher to take the pressure off the die. That way he could get those last few coin needed before the die took a powder. Don't know if it worked more than once.

Might grade MS61/2.

Yes, usually if they have good luster and not many marks they will grade high. Weak strikes are pretty common on these, especially on the eagle's breast feathers.

I have come back and looked at this several times. Just don't see the die break. Where is it at?

Boy, the fields is especially clean, but that poor strike is really bad on the eye - mine keep focusing on it. I would go with MS 62.

busthalf: The die crack is in the upper wing just below the first T in states. I think.

muddler: Those are old Las Vegas terms. And the phrase is "took a powder" meaning the end or fini. Maybe I should have called it a stiker but I like stamper better.

Is this possibly a variety with the Die Break in the wing? There is also a nice die clash in the field to the right of Liberty (also somewhat to the left).

If you find any info on a die break variety that would interesting SilverTurtle. Pointing out the clashes might further support the idea that the die was failing.

muddler: Maybe puncher would have been good I don't think I like pressor sounds like someone doing pants.

Does anyone know where I can find more information on Die Variations on Walking Liberty half dollars? I'll see if I can find any other die oddities on the coin. There is some clashing on the reverse too.

I came across this 1945-S today. It has a weak strike, not as weak as yours. It also has a die break on the wing, but it's not the same reverse die.

I could not find any thing on die varieties.
