Keep them, but do not worry about the melt ban; treat them like copper bullion.

As biggfredd mentioned above, you can sell them ebay. You may be able to find a dealer, whether at a local shop or at a coin show, that would purchase them. Keep in mind that a dealer will pay less than a buyer on ebay.

Yeah, a dealer will probably pay less, but you also have to look at shipping costs, effort and time. It takes a bit of doing to securely pack a bunch of pennies. Also ebay and paypal fees. Check out http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm. You might be surprised at how little you'll make on them after everyone takes their cut. Do the math to see where you'll make the most. I mentioned to my wife that I was looking at selling all the coppers we've been sorting and she about flipped when I told her we'd only make about $20 profit or so on $100 face. She then lectured me that we're keeping them until they are worth more. I love having a wife that's just as committed as I am

Quote: I have heard of people looking through pennies looking for pre-1982 cents for the copper Actually it's pre-1983 Lincoln cents ... 1982 was a transitional year with mostly copper (87.8% by my numbers) and the end of the year was zinc production. I'm roll searching cents for varieties so for me it's no worries to throw the copper in my old 5-gallon carboy ... if I ever get it filled then I'll worry about what to do with them. David

Correct, but it is pre-1982 for those that do not feel like sorting the 1982 cents. I guess I fall into that group right now. I have a container full of unsorted 1982 cents. Will they be flipped, balanced, weighed, or ran through a mechanical separator? I have no idea, but I am sure my son will be the one doing it. Some day.

johnnybingo, start a new thread on your coin...not nice to hijack somebody else's and welcome ! I'm averaging $172 for $100FV on ebay....not hard to pack if you know how, they will fit in a medium flat rate box. After fees I'm still making about $55 profit.

Quote: sry I just joined I'm not to sure how it all works and ty anyway. Don't feel to bad about that. As you stick around here you'll find that mamy times how a post starts has little to do with the subject after a few dozen replys anyway. And as noted many times on this forum, melting of almost any coins goes on and on and on all the time regardless of any laws. Copper coins are usually thrown in with wires and cables at smelters all the time by electricians. Many jewlers melt anything Siver. As noted the best thing to do is to simply sell what you have on ebay. And don't forget to always mention "UNSEARCHED"
