I Need Advise

So far there has been alot of good info and advice given in this thread,,

I buy online and I also utilize ebay,, and both should be viewed the same way,,

The buyer should have enough info and knowledge to make good decisions about the coins they are buying,, because no matter which you choose online coin dealers or ebay the risk is the same . there are good sellers and bad in both venues.

Learning to grade from photo's is a must ,, for anyone who buys online and then developing a trust of the sellers we choose to use adds to that ability,, take some time to check out our coin grading practice forum,, this will help you when buying from pictures .

But most of all have fun with your collection there will not be another like it in the world !!

You might want to check out the ebay section of this forum - its got a lot of good info on it, and will open your eyes to what can be listed for the unwary. I also think its not a bad idea to start out with what your friend is collecting - be sure to ask him why he likes a particular coin, and dislikes another - many times someone will see something that you are not looking for and can point out potential problems to you. Normally a good dealer can educate you as well, but you said you didnt have one close to you....must be time to move then!!

Wscoin is not that far away. It's the coin "shows" that would be far away. Sacramento might be a possibility if they have a coin show, but it's 2 hours travel time in "good" traffic and it would have to be a whole day devoted to the coin show. That might make wife and kids a little unhappy with Daddy's new hobby.

Like I posted earlier, my friend collects Morgan silver dollars mostly and that appears to be what I'm going to aim for, but after looking at the Mercury dimes that I could pick up for pocket change, I may get both. Then I also saw the thread on Franklin half dollars and I can pick those up for pocket change. But if I'm going to get all three from wscoin, I want to know if there are online dealers who are more competitively priced. (I then research it to get a clear perspective.) I don't want to go to any "auction" sites to simply bid on a coin. I want to be able to purchase it when I see it.

I hate to say it, but the tone of your thread seems more like a desire to justify doing business with this specific dealer than to acquire more general knowledge about where to buy great coins at fair prices. Should you ask that, you'll find that everyone here has an opinion based on experience.

Thanks for the input, Dave. A guy on the other forum wrote, "They are always happy to send an image of any coin that I have a question about."

Another guy wrote that "without seeing the coins in hand" there is "absolutely no way to evaluate them." And I assume that putting up an image of every coin, front and back, would be time consuming and the cost would be passed along to the customer.

I figure if they have a 30-day return policy and have been in business for a while, I can't lose. But you are right. I am trying to justify doing business with this specific dealer. It seems like good business savvy to justify doing business with someone BEFORE actually doing business. My coin collecting friend has already told me that wscoin is the best place to get great coins at the best price. I don't want a "fair" price. I want the best price, and I want things like free shipping and good customer service. I'd be happy to find out that doing business with wscoin is NOT justified, and I'd be happy to find a better website. That's why I came onto the coin forums. A pick and click on one site is just as easy as doing it on another site. If wscoin is not the way to go, I want to know that.

And I certainly would like everyone's opinion based on experience, so I am now asking, "Where can I buy great coins at the best prices?"

Thanks SE. It's the time away from family that makes the 2-hour commute to Sacramento and the all-day experience a bit much. But if I see a coin show in Sacramento, I will definitely consider going to it. I could also drive to the wscoin shop in less time. Are you totally against buying online, even if a friend recommends a site?

Right now I am considering Morgans, along with Mercury dimes and Franklins. Would you recommend U.S. coins or foreign coins to start with?

I know I have looked at other site but I do not have them in my favorites. I will keep my opened for you also I know you do not like auction but keep a eye one Bobby and susans auction they are the forum Mom and Dad. and you cna trust them. But if you end up also wanting to collect silver or gold bullion dollar I have about 4 or 5 link I have bought from that are good. but like my last post if you are set on wscoin. and none of use can requmend them. But if you trust your frined and he trust them then go for it. the thing to remember most coin magazine you buy the dealer in there are ussally even more expensive then wscoin or coin shop so make sure you also learn prices and like others have said make sure you buy a RedBook. gives you a price not to spend more then plus it will let you see all of the US coins and you may even fine something you like more the morgans or Mercury dimes.

I will only buy on-line when I can see a good photo of the coin and then only from a dealer I have experience with and trust. Yes, there MUST me a return/refund guarantee. If your friend has done business with them and is very satisfied with the products he has received and you trust him then why not give them a chance.

Steve, the 30-day return policy is why I would order online. I order my nutritional supplements online simply because I can sit in front of my computer and do it, even though the mall where I can purchase them is 5 minutes away.

wscoin just sent me an image of what may be my first purchase. It's a 1921 P Morgan silver dollar, Grade: AU+. It's $18.03 for a non-member, but if I'm going to be doing business with them on a regular basis, which I think I will, I'll go ahead and join their coin club and pay the member price of $17.50.
