Here is my take on it- be glad you did not spend $8.75 too much for a corroded and damaged IHC

"Extra-Good"? That ranks up there with "Extra-Medium" shirts; they have XS and XL, why not have XM?

I have heard of people closing auctions early (for one reason or another), but not canceling it after the auction closes. Sounds suspicious, like the end result did not meet his/hers expectations. IMO: If you don't want to take the chance of being disappointed with the outcome of the auction (coming up short), don't put it up without a reserve.

Extra-medium shirts - that's hillarious! and spot-on.

I would leave negative feedback stating the reason he cancelled the auction. Sellers stress that when you bid on an item, you are contractually obligated to pay, they are also contractually obligated to sell the item. Personally, be glad you didn't win that coin, it looks in horrible condition and there is no pic of the reverse. 1876 isn't a hard year to get. He probably thought it was really old, looked up a price in EF condition and thought it should sell for that or more.

I took a blood bath on a coin recently but never once did it cross my mind to cancel the auction, play dumb or whatever.

I threw it up for grabs and paid dearly for it. But, I sent it out on time, packaged properly, reluctantly, grumbling the whole time - but I lived up to my end of the bargain.

Way to go, Sccoby. That falls under the broad category "the right thing to do" that I frequently mention to my kids. Every once in awhile, I have to add that "the right thing to do stinks sometimes."

robbudo,
Most likely you're right, he just didn't get the price he wanted. But I've even had a member here misplace a coin I inquired about, so it happens. I'd base my feedback on the tone of his communication, neutral max. Much better luck next time!

Unethical person. I wish this would be grounds to kick someone off ebay but, it's ebay.

What would the ebay gods do in this matter?
Who would be right, the seller or the buyer?

I would give neutral feedback, but they haven't left me feedback yet (naturally), and I know i'll get a negative/neutral one right back (it's happened before), so i'll do what most do on ebay and not leave anything. it sucks.

A seller cannot leave anything but positive FB, retaliatory negs no longer exist.

Leaving a neg is the only recourse you have, sadly, despite all the nonsense about bidding being a contract. As biokemist6 says, sellers can no longer leave bad feedback, so you don't have to worry about retaliation.
