Well... the moment of truth. Grade assigned VF35. It appears the few hits dropped her down a bit. Still nice enough detail IMO. Also have NGC 1810/09 Classic Head I'll share later. Thanks for sharing everyone!   |

Without the deductions the coin in my opinion would grade EF-45. There is more than slight wear on the brow hair. The reverse on the other hand I would grade an AU-50. I think with the detractions a grade of VF-35 is acceptable. I'm surprised that they didn't attribute it to a Sheldon variety? I'm leaning towards S-237, but that's just a quick guess. One would need to have the coin in front of them to assign the correct variety and therefore correct rarity factor. A VF higher rarity coin could be worth more than an EF lower rarity one.
Early American Coppers are wonderful to collect (1/2 cents and Large cents). And eacs.org is a great organization.

KK & Johnny54321 -bought this from S.Yancey. I'm fairly certain KK that your attribution is correct. Don't have access to my notes at the moment. I'll get back to you on that one. SY also felt could be EF using ANACS standards which is part why I grabbed it.

I'm sticking with XF40. I agree that the distractions on the obverse played a role in the final grade assigned. PCGS is super conservative on old copper.
KK, PCGS charges a small fee for variety attribution, I think $5 but not sure, then it goes on the holder.
Early copper, specifically Colonials are my favorite interest :P

vermontensium- The old copper gals have become my favorite as well. The Colonials are growing on me and I plan on picking up the book you suggested.
KK- Just checked and S-237 is what it was represented as to me so you nailed it. Haven't picked up Noyes Book yet, but matches the diagnostics in Whimsy.

Most dealers who have any number of Large Cents, should have a few Colonials ;) There are some buys on ebay too. Just do your homework. swcoin.ecrater.com

I personally try to stay away from slabbed coins, especially coppers. The few that I've bought in slabs I've broken out. I wasn't aware that the TPG charge you more to attribute a coin as to the variety. This is why education is a must, especially on the early coins . Thanks Vermontensium for the heads up on the extra charge. It is another reason for me to stay away from slabbers. KK |

Yeah, I am sure it's there fee for the research. PCGS might be more $5.
I have my nicer Colonials slabbed only because I want them to be protected. I know, it's probably overkill and I can always crack em out later. I can care less about their opinion on grade ¦]
