Yes, it looks like the 2010 D could be an error too! Or is it just the plastic?

Dear US Treasury Department,

I would like you to know that I have been using your product for some time now. As a repeat customer I would like to ask for a favor. I would love to have a set of all of the coins ever minted in the US from each of the mints. I would prefer MS-66 or better, but MS-65s would be fine. I would be glad to pay any shipping cost.

I would also like a full set of US bills in each denomination ever printed. Please let me know the estimated date of delivery and I will promptly send you a check for shipping once the product arrives.

Please remember, I pay my taxes each year in US issued bills and coins.

As you know, the would has many countries to choose from and I would hate to have to change the currency and coins I've enjoyed for so many years. I'm sure it won't come to this as I know you will quickly fulfill this simple request.

Thanks,
Ben

P.S. Could you also send me any error coins that you may have waiting to be melted and re-struck?

P.P.S. Shipping details have been sent under separate cover.

Zinc planchets go for around $1, but sent free from the mint? Who knows! Did they send you a letter with the coin? If you have documentation that they sent it to you it could make a big difference in price. I've never seen a mint issued free sample with an error included. Keep everything that was sent with the coins!

They were selling those for awhile and they also distributed them at some event. Maybe the ANA last year.

How cool! How much did they cost at that time? If it's mint issued it has to have at least some value over a normal planchet. Thanks for the info, Conder. I'm going to start looking for one now!

They give these to clubs by the dozens to hand out to youths in educational settings. Zinc planchets are worth a buck or so. I still have at least 10 of these I was given as instructional tools in teaching coin collecting merit badge to the scouts. They are in a box with pencils, bookmarks, and little bags of shredded money I give to my scouts when they come to me to work on the merit badge.

By the way - these are technically not error "coins" - because to be a "coin" in the first place, they would have had to have a design struck onto them. These are simply blanks that were made to become coins and never got that far.

He posted another photo of the 2010D and it didn't have the "mark" that the original photo did - so, I assume it was just the plastic.

so, they would let me have one because of the fact they melt them down.
its a wasted error coin, I guess you could say.
it just gets melted down.
