Oh, I know. I do see many out there. I am doing a VF-XF set so....it will probably be a nice mid VF, maybe an XF ;-)

WOW!!

I am speechless! I am without speech!

The 1856 has a mintage of 2,000 (according to my 2012 RedBook).

Johnny "Countdown"! You are my hero!

Actually Moe, the 1856 has a true mintage of 600! In subsequent years, they were "restruck" for collectors on the order of about 1600. Thus the wish for an MS rather than a PR, generally speaking the PR's are considered to be the restrikes.

And now Johnny has a great piece to barter when he meets a dealer with a nice MS piece!

True. In general as a collectable, either the original pattern or later "restrike" is considered in the overall 1856 mintage and are priced more or less the same in a general sense....so together they make up the 2-3K mintage combined. I definitely would prefer the VF20 S-3(discussed previously in this thread) to my PR30. However, I would have had to pay a hefty premium. This PR30 coin I think I am getting a better deal on, and could realize a stronger profit if I resold it.

I agree John,
You did quite well on that coin. You paid at least $800 less then it's FMV IMO.
Proofs have always been struck with the collector in mind, thus making the MS issues more desirable.
Extremely rare any way you slice it!

Thanks Dave! I got $100 back in ebay bucks too for that purchase!

Too bad tomcollectables sold that VF-20. I would go back to his shop and see if he would trade me straight up for the PR30, since he's mentioned to me he doesn't care about the variety.

Yeah, I know. After examination, it was definitely an S-3.
Hey, that PR30 is one heck of an incredible coin!
I think eventually, you will bump into a dealer that has a VF S-3 that might be apt to trade as delaner said ;)
I will keep an eye out for ya.

The reality of this purchase hasn't really hit me yet. I don't think it will sink in until I actually have the coin in my shaky quivering hands...lol. This one will go straight to an SDB!

BTW Dave, I will keep my eyes peeled for a 09-s. There are some decent deals to be had on the bay.

Awesome, thanks! We are partners...lol!
I know the feeling, when I bought my Moffat & Co.$5, I had to pinch myself.

A beat up S-5 (not a chain, but a wreath) sold on ebay today for under $400. I thought about putting in a bid, but decided not to. It was about the worst I've ever seen, G5 detail over AG3, but it looked like it had a bullet go into it's edge.

A really NICE S-3 sold on Sunday for $7k - sounds like a lot, but imo it was a 9 - $12k coin at least. Must buy more lottery tickets.

I would have paid $600 all day long minus the edge hit!
Wow.
Yeah, I've looked at some Wreath's but would rather get the moolah together for a Chain.
I have seen a few PCGS FR02's lately...even these are selling for serious money. Not entirely out of my budget ;-)
I would like SOME detail.
