Platinum is much rarer.
Although there are many factors which help to determine the bullion value of any PM, it is fairly obvious to most people that platinum is undervalued relative to gold at this point in time.
Or is gold overvalued just now? Has market sentiment too much influence just now on the price of gold?

Swapping gold for platinum makes a lot of sense especially if your cost base on gold is low. A very good idea indeed.

My average price on the gold was 835/oz, with platinum prices being far more stable I'm happy . People seem happy to trade as well, with all of the publicity gold has gotten it's much easier to sell

Wow Bob, 40 oz of gold, some traded for platinum that does sound like a fine plan. Heck, if I had 40 oz. of gold, I would retire, lol....

I did see a bid on a running auction at $215 on a 1/10th platinum proof, and another that ended with no bids, starting bid $220, and $10 more freight. So $220, maybe $225 seems to be the cut off Mendoza line for the 1/10th platinum proofs, unless you want it asap an go buy it now, where around $240 is as cheap as you will find most likely.... Just about the exact same going rate for 1/10ths gold eagles on ebay as well these days, which makes sense since G an P are only 6 bucks apart....

hm...maybe worth while getting into Pt. Another member here mentioned a good strategy, buy gold when gold is lower than platinum and sell to buy back platinum when gold inches higher.

On very rare occasions in the past, the price of gold has exceeded that of platinum. Whenever this happens, it is a screaming BUY signal for platinum. Trading Au for Pt at anything approaching parity is a very smart play that should work exceptionally well.

Even for small bit players, it makes sense just now to buy Pt in 1/20 lots.
Unfortunately, the premiums on small amounts are higher, but that applies to all PM's.
Is it possible to buy 20 x 1/20 oz. pieces for the premium of a full 1 oz. piece?

Well, if you could find ten of those 1/10th oz. Platinum proofs for say $220 bucks each and that is a huge if, unless platinum takes a one week slide or something instead of trying to stay ahead of gold, then that would be a total of $2200, and that is only $322 bucks over spot.... Now if a person was patient an waited to snake each one or two in the dips at say $200 each, well then that would not be bad at all for a metal so rare all of which that has been mined thus far could fit in a racket ball court, according to what Biggfredd posted a couple of months back, and worth the few extra hundred over melt in the LONG RUN IMO..... And it draws plenty of attention on ebay as well. Perhaps nowhere the amount that gold an silver draws, but it gets its share of bids. Most of which are starting at $200 bucks, unless you wanna buy one of those 1.3 gram Apollo fifteen coins from like 1972 that come in the red cases for around $130. Or perhaps a 1/20th platinum Koala coin, which goes for about $160 on ebay....

Was just looking at that koala coin. Seems to be slim pickings for Pt coins on the bay though. Have my eyes on a set of proof Pt koalas, works out to be 2000/oz. Maybe i'll go straight to the dealers for this time.

Better off with Perth Mint plain bullion koalas rather than the proof version. They carry far less premium and have the same design. However, they are regarded as bullion only, not coins. Moot point, with that sort of NCLT. All are 99.999% pure. To me, the bullion coins look just as nice as the proof ones.

Do you know where to buy straight up bullion Pt koalas? Perth Mint itself only sells their "dreaming" series and that commands quite a premium as well

You are right Poboxw, as the paltinum is slim pickens on ebay. Less competion one day, even though I expect its popularity to continue to grow.... The only Koala I know of on ebay, is for sale by silver band medals, the guy who has the blue background for all his auctions, for I think $159.99 buy it now.... You buy from there, you are paying a pretty hefty premium, and surely you could find a better bulk deal straight from the dealer as you mentioned....

Every time I see the 1/10th and 1/20th oz. gold or platinum coins for sale, there is quite a hefty premium attached to them. If you want $2000+ an oz. gold, just buy it 1/10th of an oz. at a time and you are there! :-/
