Colorized Coins

Concur. A coin that has been painted or otherwise colourized after it has left the mint has ceased to be a "coin"; it's now "art". There are people who collect such things, even pay more than an unpainted coin for one, but they aren't necessarily the same people who collect "coins".

On a related note, have any of the US mints caught the latest craze of issuing officially colourized coins yet? Here in Oz, both the "official" mints (RAM and Perth) have been issuing NCLT coins with colour for a few years now. If they haven't yet, give them time - virtually everyone seems to be doing it these days. And of course the Canadians are experimenting with putting coloured spots on circulating coins.

I tend to agree with everyone that they should not be colored. But on the other hand I have seen old enameled coins from Europe fetch good prices.

As an early gift, I received a set of the U.S. Colorized nickels. I would not collect them per se but, the coloring is quite nice and really highlights the details. I might look at other coins just to see what the details look like and might even purchase one or two more if they look nice, perhaps as a necklace piece but, not as a numismatic item.

For fun I have:

All the colorized, hologramed, and gold plated '99-'05 State Quarters,
2001 Yankees teams New York State Quarters,
2001 Barry Bonds HR silver dollar (pictured)
2001 Alex Rodriguez silver dollar.
etc, etc

So I like to collect these just for fun and to show people when they visit or if we have a party.

Now after collecting starting my eagle collection this year, I look at the Barry Bonds coin a little differently now. Its ugly in comparison, but non-collectors think its COOLalong with The Greatest Baseball Team Ever New York Yankees State Quarter set

Well, I am in favour of "colorised" coins.
Not painted or stamped ones, only the ones that the their colour is given before they leave the mint.

I have a couple colorized coins that I purchased strictly as novelties because of subject matter of interest to me. I have many other "coins" that are colored/enameled but they fall into a different category called "military challenge coins".
