I may be wrong here (happens more often than not) but I'm of a mind that a painted coin is an altered coin, thus making it a novelty. Are you folks here on the forum of the same mind?

Concur. A coin that has been painted or otherwise colourized after it has left the mint has ceased to be a "coin"; it's now "art". There are people who collect such things, even pay more than an unpainted coin for one, but they aren't necessarily the same people who collect "coins".

On a related note, have any of the US mints caught the latest craze of issuing officially colourized coins yet? Here in Oz, both the "official" mints (RAM and Perth) have been issuing NCLT coins with colour for a few years now. If they haven't yet, give them time - virtually everyone seems to be doing it these days. And of course the Canadians are experimenting with putting coloured spots on circulating coins.

Edited typo: I meant to say, "Its NOW art."
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Sap, the US Mint has never released any colorized or enameled coins. Frankly, I hope they never do as most of them are gaudy.

Although, I have to admit, I just purchased from Bigfella a RAM Ocean Series $1 Dolphin for my wife for Christmas- she loves anything dolphin-related

I tend to agree with everyone that they should not be colored. But on the other hand I have seen old enameled coins from Europe fetch good prices.

I was able to remove the color from this coin. It was just a very thin layer of enamel which came off easily by using my finger nail.

I have an image, but no matter what I do I can not seem to up load it.

As an early gift, I received a set of the U.S. Colorized nickels. I would not collect them per se but, the coloring is quite nice and really highlights the details. I might look at other coins just to see what the details look like and might even purchase one or two more if they look nice, perhaps as a necklace piece but, not as a numismatic item.

Good on yer, mate. Us Aussies lead the world, especially in coloured coin minting.
The latest set of coloured coins from the RAM are world beaters, get in on the ground floor I say.
Dame Ednas' just been issued by our Perth Mint in colour, beats other PNC's hands down. Don't hesitate.

For fun I have:

All the colorized, hologramed, and gold plated '99-'05 State Quarters,
2001 Yankees teams New York State Quarters,
2001 Barry Bonds HR silver dollar (pictured)
2001 Alex Rodriguez silver dollar.
etc, etc

So I like to collect these just for fun and to show people when they visit or if we have a party.

Now after collecting starting my eagle collection this year, I look at the Barry Bonds coin a little differently now. Its ugly in comparison, but non-collectors think its COOLalong with The Greatest Baseball Team Ever New York Yankees State Quarter set

We had a similar discussion in Germany on new tendencies and new themes for memorial coins.
A German coin magazine performed a reader's inquiry with the result, that the majority of coin collectors had a conservative view on coins. No colored coins, no special alloys (nickel, tantalum, iridium etc), only round, no multi edges coin, not holed.
Simply said: round silver pieces with serious historical events.
No film stars, no sport heroes, no entertainers.
But politicians, historic events, scientists, authors, poets and musicians.
We the collectors have the power to influence the issue policy by our behavior: Collect only what you want and beware of commercialization tendencies.

Well, I am in favour of "colorised" coins.
Not painted or stamped ones, only the ones that the their colour is given before they leave the mint.

I have already expressed my personal view on colorised coins.
I do not want to convince anybody what to collect.
Everyone should collect those coins he likes.
But he always should have in mind the situation, that once he might be forced or interested to sell his collection or part of it.
He will have difficulties to receive 10 % of what he has payed for those coins.
Happy holidays

Everyone has their own special tastes. Colorized coins are desired by some collectors and I also would treat them as unique novelties and may own some someday.

I have a couple colorized coins that I purchased strictly as novelties because of subject matter of interest to me. I have many other "coins" that are colored/enameled but they fall into a different category called "military challenge coins".

This is a genuine Japanese 2003 1000 yen coin minted to commemorate the 5th Asian Winter Games in Aomori.

Not cheap at all I say - bidders in Yahoo Japan auctions have been bidding some insane 65,000 yen which is like 550USD. Appearently the JNDA 07 catalogue put a value of 95,000 yen, which I think it's insane. Obviously I didn't pay that much and just paid a fraction of it.
