Absent the cheek mark, this one is a slam dunk for MS-64 very nice luster and the surface spotting is trivial and not distracting could easily be removed with a dip probably just some film from contact with the edge of the mint bag. What will hurt a grade is dark carbon spots on the surface but on this coin I don't see any.

Well, that's encouraging. Thanks to all that responded. I was ready to go with MS 62 or 63, but after further examination I'm thinking she might just go MS 64.....

My reasoning ? The "gash" across her cheek in the first photo is actually not on the coin - it must've been a mark on the holder that I did not notice when taking the photo, and is not visible to me now. As a matter of fact, the only small bag mark I can find on her is on the lower portion of her throat, and even that is barely visible. The surface spotting is not nearly as pronounced as it appears in the photo, either. The reverse is even more pleasing with strong details and good luster.

Guess I need to liberate her from the holder (with gloves, of course) and get some better photos....these pics just don't do her justice.

Thanks one and all for the knowledgable opinions.

Here's a PCGS MS-66 with very original surfaces for comparison:

Okay, I carefully liberated her from the holder (with gloves) and wiped her off with a very soft micro-fiber cloth for some better photos.....this is how she really looks :

I think I'm going to go with MS 64, based on what I'm seeing now that she's out of the holder. There are a few tiny bag marks to the left of her nose, but they are so small they don't really detract from the overall appearance.

I think she's definitely a keeper - what say you ?

That doesn't sound good.

Any hairline scratches?

None that I can see, even at magnification....just a few bag marks here and there.

I was very gentle with her. Today's photos reveal a much different coin outside the holder.

Without that mark, this coin would be a easy 64.

MS-65 might be a little bit of a stretch, but I can't rule it out, either. Either way, I appreciate all the informed opinions.

Yep, this one's a keeper

1881-s is known for a "wealth" of spectacular strikes..while your last photos show detail, yet the original photos, show luster and "toning"..these latter photo's show neither...
your first photo's show a scratch on the face, which could be on the plastic.but the toning is in plain sight.....Go back to your previous settings and capture the real luster of the coin with no scratch...for a real evaluation...IF YOU want a real evaluation.. show the coin..as it is, not tilted or over lighted,,with or without defects...photo's/lighting and there angles will hide this stuff..do what you will...

I think its mint state and that it cant be higher then ms63 because of the scratch on the cheek.

I just had same year and mint graded by NGC. Mine has rubbing on the cheek and went for a MS 64. I think yours is higher.

Took another look at the two sets of photos... I think this is almost certainly MS-65
