@Hambone... Nope on the Large Cents. I love them, but I have put my eggs in an Early Commemorative basket. The basket must have a hole in it, as my dollars keep flying out...

@DVC I have no clue (nor reference material). The eagle does appear to have a clipped wingtip though... That should be an indicator I'm thinking.

And as per variety of your FEC, do I see a die file mark going from the upper right corner of the M in AMERICA to the rim above the left edge of the E? While you're looking closely at the coin, do you see some doubling on the first T of STATES?

The FEC is simply sublime...beautiful.

The 1850...bothers me too. Believe this was a dug coin - see the grit on the reverse in the lettering.

It's a nice FE, and I see the broken wingtip too Not sure of the specific variety.

Alright, I've been conspicuously quiet about this thread because I'm not really educated enough on the subject.

But my first venture with the large cent is that it is AU, recolored. It's a beautiful red for most of the surface, but the pitting and verdigris lead me to believe this cent looked a lot different not that long ago. Please forgive me if I'm wrong, but that's my guess. I say AU because some of the field looks like it has lost its luster. That might just be the angle of the photograph.

As for the FE, it's gorgeous. I'll say high AU again, and again because of the fields and the high points on the reverse. Could just be weakly struck (I hope?)

I could be wrong, but that's my gut!

Regarding the FE, Beautiful coin!
Honestly, I don't see any wear on that one--normal FE strike issues, but it looks ~MS63.

Well, the eagle flew the coop. It went to my favorite coin dealer for melt Morgans - lotssssssss of them. It was a beautiful FEC, but I have a better one in my Type Set, sooooooooo it's indirectly feeding my Early Commemorative addiction... Guess it's "Spreading its wings and flying away again"(to butcher an old Elton John song). Paleoguy
