Considering a good lists out at 750, 230 isn't beyond reason IMO. Yeah, the obverse is jacked, but then they paid a price equal to the condition. But that is WAAAAAYYYYY subjective.

Ebayers sure are an odd bunch. If I cut out a cardboard disc and drew an 1877 IH on it in crayon, these fools would bit it up to hundreds. I just have to be sure to mention it's a key date and has never been cleaned.

Maybe it has 33 bids on it because it's "uncleaned".

Maybe they're just people who want an 1877 to fill a hole and don't care what it looks like..

I wouldn't pay 230 bucks for a hole-filler.

I would if it was the last one I needed to complete a low-mid grade date set.

I could easily see paying a few hundred bucks for a hole-filler if he hole's been staring at you and laughing at you for many years.

If this coin had either half those obverse scratches or much lighter scratches, the price would be worth it. You have to understand not everyone can afford an 1877, even a filler. These scratches or even gouges are far to severe to warrant this price IMHO. I have seen much nicer fillers for far less money.

You know, considering it's rarity, I could live with that reverse at that price... but that obverse... wow, that's one ugly looking coin! And way too many scratches. I pass. There'll be others.

Holed and cleaned are the two problems I cannot stand, but I think I am with you on this one bman.

A cleaned coin I could live with. I would never want a holed coin or a severely scratched coin like this one. The way I see it is that a cleaned coin might be 'fixed' by being a pocket piece (or at least may have some eye appeal if left alone). However, there is no fixing or living with a hole or scratches like that.

Wow, she has been badly abused, given that a problem free FR/AG starts around $300, $230 with scratches is reasonable. Some collectors just want to fill a hole with a legit coin with problems.

I can live with a mild wiping if it is unobtrusive. I can live with a single scratch on a circulated coin if it is the kind of scratch that might be caused by circulation (as opposed to someone taking a nail to the coin). Holed, polished or coins with a heavy cleaning are not nearly as acceptable, and I will only consider them if they are at an amazingly low price compared to a similar undamaged coin.
