i have a couple of coins, nickels and cents that are barely recognizable as coins. what do people use as date restorer? I would normally never introduce coin to chemical, but these couldn't get any worse. I'm just dying to know what date one of my cents is. I can just make out a part of the date, and a tiny bit of mintmark.

Nic-A-Date(ferric nitrate) only works on 75/25 CuNi compositions aka nickels. Other chemicals will marginally work on silver coins(concentrated acids) but I am not aware of anything that will work on copper cents. Small cents have very little additional metal and large cents are pure copper but the process works by selective etching so you need a two metal alloy for the process to work.

I too am not aware of any chemical that would restore a date on a cent. Not sure anyone ever would try unless it turned out to be a fantastic coin. You could try https://www.coppercoins.com
