Hello,

This is my first post to the forum so, although I read the guidelines by Susan, be gentle if I violate any established protocol or custom (but please let me know if I do).

I typically collect US coins, but am starting to become interested in coins from overseas because it gives me a great excuse to travel, and it makes my hobby/addiction of coin collecting much more tolerable to my wife. That's because her hobby is collecting anything that's "on sale". That said, on sale AND from another country is a huge bonus.

I picked these up in an estate sale and have no idea what they are (coin/medallion), or where they are from. I can clearly make out the symbol for Nipon so I am inclined to believe they are Japanese, but that's as far as I've gone. I have plowed through The 2006 Standard Catalog of World Coin Values 1901 - present but didn't see them in there which leads me to one of 2 conclusions:
They are older than 1901 (and in a nice state of preservation), or
They are Medallions or non-government commemoratives

I am in Texas this week and the coins are in California, so I can't provide much more detail than the following until I return on Saturday:
  • I haven't been able to weigh them, but they "feel" like they weigh less than an Eisenhower

  • They appear to share the same reverse

  • They have the Medallion orientation between the obverse and reverse

That's about it oh wise ones. Thoughts?

Hello and welcome, the "coins" especially the Dragon side look like one of the typical copper nickel Fantasy issues that come out of China. The top post - the "childish" looking face - has a clear seam line at the midline of the rim. This could be a cast die or an injection molded coin. If the edge is reeded with vertical lines like a US Quarter Dollar look to make sure the reeds are full and solid across the entire coin. If the coins are about 38-39 mm and weigh about 21-23 grams - you definitely have a fantasy. There are literally hundreds of varieties. Swamperbob

They are Chinese emperors of the Qing dynasty, but my guess is that they are modern fantasy "coins." 1796-1820 are the dates of the Jiaqing Emperor and 1851 (or 1850)- 1861 are the dates of the Xianfeng emperor. The dragon on the reverse appears to be a crude copy of dragon design used on a coin issued by Yuan Shikai. The weird thing about that dragon is that I suspect it wasn't designed by a Chinese artist (Chinese dragons never have wings).

I am not aware of anyone who has compiled a list of these fantasies. One problem is that they are still being produced and each year new varieties are turning up.

You are all right. These are Fantasy coins. If you find some Chinese coin that didn't be found in the Krause catalog. You must pay attention to counterfeit.
