Brown would be fine. If a cent is recolored would it be glossy and shine or would it be dull? How can you tell if Copper has been recolored or reconditioned?

I don't really know to tell you the truth. I don't think that all of them I've look at lately have been cleaned just really brown and have a shine.

I have seen some labeled recolored in ANACS slabs but I am not 100% sure how to tell the difference between them

I believe that these two have been recolored. My reason is that the color is different (lighter) in areas that just seem a bit unnatural. See for yourself:

they sure are purdy recolored or not I would probably buy them for a type set just because of the condition of them. I have come to find real nice coins in older date copper is alot harder to find than high grade morgans

I got these for my US Type Set. You're right - old copper is very hard to find with nice original surfaces and color. When you do find one, the price is usually astronomical.

Yes beleive me I do know, I just finished my copper page of my Dansco 7070 and I have to say it was pretty hard paying $1000.00+ for a coin that was worth a cent when it was made. It is hard to pay that kind of money for a dollar coin but I have kind of gotten used to that but a coin that is worth 1/100th or even worse 1/200th of a dollar it is just hard to get used to, I am so glad that page is 100% finished now and I can move on to the other coins. I am photographing the album now and will be posting pictures of the progress thus far probably later on today because I have to take my daughter to a halloween thing at the cointy fair grounds and will probably not be back until around 7 or 8. I was fortunate to be able to keep AU-55 the lowest grade coin in the set so far so I am pretty happy with the coins it is just the prices I had to pay for MS-63 cents is what blew me away.

Difficult to tell from the photos. Try taking the photos outdoors, on a white background, not in direct sunlight. However, recolored coins are usually cleaned coins. Not many people are nutty enough to actually recolor a coin, however, there are a lot of wierdos out there. Your coins do not appear to have been tampered with from what is shown on the photos. Always look for a coin that looks new by the color and brightness and has obvious wear. An example would be if the word Liberty on the headband on your coin would have shown wear and the coin was bright and shinny it would have been cleaned. Unfortunately many older coins have been cleaned somewhere in the past. Slight differences in color could be just due to the location your in and the different climatic conditions. Examples are Copper coins in the upper Indiana area have a tendency to show greenish contaminatioins so people are always rubbing them with spit or water to get rid of that. Long time ago it was comon to rub older coins with spit or something to make them not look so old. What you have looks realllllllllly nice to me. I wouldn't worry about them being cleaned or recolored if your planning on keeping them.
