I recently posted a message about completing a series, and one of the members said he had completed several of the same series. This made me wonder - what do you do with the coins that you replaced.
Do you sell them to generate money for future purchases?
Do you keep them, and begin another set of the same series? If so, why?
Do you hold onto them as an investment for the future years?
Being somewhat of a novice in this hobby, I have been using the Dansco Albums as my guide when collecting a series, and I try to get one coin for each marked hole in the album. To me, that's a complete set - not including any varieties, or errors. That's what seems to work best for me right now.
But, back to my original question - what do you do with the lower grade coins that you have replaced?

I usually trade them back to a dealer or give them to youngsters who may be just starting out or have limited funds. I enjoy a YN's enthusiam and thrill when they receive something that they don't have and/or want. I should say that I "give" them to others depending upon the particular coin, etc.

Let me commend you on this practice and hope more people adopt this method of disposing of coins that they have no or little further use for in completing their sets. What better way of stimulating someone into started and having the joy of knowing the coin will be enjoyed for its intrinsic value and now for how much it might 'buy'.
Rest in Peace

I usually sell them to continue upgrades or sometimes to start collecting another series. Mike

Thanks Dan! I guess since I was started by that method when I was just a young/little Debbie, I'm passing it along when I can!

I've only done this a couple of times, but for lower grade silver coins only worth melt I trade them/sell them as junk silver. The coins that are worth more than melt usually are sold to a dealer, which gives me some cash to fund my coin purchase with.

its just according to what the coin is, if I know someone that needs the coin for their set I will offer it to them for trade or what ever or if I really like the coin or if its a hard to find VAM sometimes I will just keep it, but if its a common coin I will usually either offer it here for sale or put it on ebay

Why just throw them away of course.
No actually that is a problem. When I started out I put all my coins in Whitman folders. Then graduated to Whitman Classic Albums. However as time went on I found better coins than were in my albums so I put the better ones in the albums and the lesser ones in 2x2's. I continued this untill I had enough to start anther album of the same coins. Then as I found better coins I would put them in album #1, move the coin in #1 to now #2 and now the one from #2 to a 2x2. This gradually grew until I now have 10 sets of Lincolns, 3 sets of Indian cents, 3 or 4 sets of Liberty Head Nickels, 4 sets of Buffalo nickels, 8 sets of Mercury dimes, etc., etc., etc. I once started an 11th set of Lincoln Cents and said to myself, SELLLLF, stop this and just give this one away. So on the PCGS web site I started having giveaways for YN's. I had 25 such givaways and getting ready to have more. I've been collecting coins for well into the 60 year catagory so their is just to much stuff here. No one to leave it to so it may well be time to start unloading somehow.
