I save State Quarters and am filling Whitman folders full of current and recent series, and otherwise I pretty much buy whatever I like the looks of and can afford.

But a couple years ago I thought my collecting needed some focus, so I decided I wanted to acquire at least one of each denomination-type of U.S. coin, from Half Cent on up. I've got all the copper, nickel and silver, and all I need to complete it is a double eagle and a $3 gold. (Stella ain't never gonna happen -- I'm pretending there is no such thing.)

My question, however, is -- what do I call this? I refer to it as my "denomination set," but it appears that in numismatic circles that term means something else. Surely I'm not the first person who ever tried putting such a collection together.

So, what would it be called?

I thought a "type set" comprised one of each type of each denomination.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I'm talking about just one of each denomination: one half-cent, one cent, one 2-cent, a 3-cent, a Half Dime, a nickel, a dime, a 20-cent piece, a quarter, etc.

Sure you can call it an individual unique design type set or something fancy like that but it's still called a type set

You know what? I think down deep in the dark, secret recesses of my numismatic ego, that's exactly what I'm after: a really, really important-sounding name for something that is really, really pretty common.

I like the unique. How about "United States Unique Denomination Set"? Has a certain ring.

You understand that once you're done with your Denomination Set you're going to want to make it a complete Type Set anyways, right? The curse of numismatics is that, as soon as you crest the hill, you see the next one to climb.

I would have an awful lot of empty spots in a 7070, MM, as I'm talking about just one of each denomination regardless of type.

But maybe some day, if I live long enough..............

It is still a type set no matter how diversified you get with the paticlar series. FOR Example ( One lincoln or maybe abour 18 different types and sub types of lincolns).. the question is are you having fun . I know I will never be able to have a Stella either. You can also try getting one each of the" Modern British empire coins" As I Call Mine. very affordable , Interesting , buts till with just a tiny bit of challange to locate and fine each countries example to still be rewarding and Fun.

I noticed on that set he has totally left out the half dollar commems. I was thinking about doing the same thing because I see no reason for them to have 4 places for half commemerative coins, but they put them there so I just placed modern commems in mine just to fill the holes. I picked my Dansco album specifically because it didn't have the gold page in it, and now that I have started working on it I know I will end up buying the page and including it into the album so I should have just bought the album with it in there already and if I didn't want it in there just took it out but Noooo I always do it the hard way, now I gotta buy the page individually to put in the album then work on filling it up. I am not a gold person so I never thought I would want the gold coins in the set, but heck I am not a copper/zinc/nickel person either but I am having a real enjoyable time putting this set together and if I dont add it I know in the back of my mind that the album will not be 100% finished no matter how many pages are full

I wish that I had a gold coin in my collection for every time I've heard this statement! It's sad but true, so get used to it, and just enjoy.
