1874 CC Trade Dollar? - Coin Community Forum

gcpd35 New Member United States 49 Posts	Posted 10/14/2011 03:17 am Hello all, I have a question about a 1874 CC Trade dollar. I have one and it has several chop marks on it. I mean there are 6-7 on the reverse, and 10-12 on the obverse. Does that ruin the coins numismatic value. I actually bought because I love the history of the coin. I mean think about how many times that coin crossed the big pond. Plus I love the CC (cowboy coin) mint mark. I'm a big geek when it comes to Bat, Wyatt, or Doc and the thought that one of those guys possibly had one of the CC coins in there possession. Anyway back to the reason for this post, does a "chopped" up Trade dollar lose, retain, or gain value? Report this Post to the Staff

Bilbo Pillar of the Community United States 812 Posts	Posted 10/14/2011 09:34 am Chop marks on Trade dollars are pretty common and they certainly do add to the 'history' of the coin. A fair number of collectors prefer chop marked Trade dollars for that very reason. However, they do reduce the numismatic value. They won't "ruin" the value, but it will sell for less than an unmarked coin. The amount of the reduction depends on the number of marks and whether they obscure the major design elements. (A chop mark on Liberty's face will reduce value more than one in the field.) Sadly, Trade dollars are one of the most counterfeited coins in the market, and some counterfeits are then chop marked to make them look more authentic. Many collectors simply won't purchase them unless they are slabbed. Report this Post to the Staff
