Hi everyone, I got this as an uncleaned coin supposedly from 50-200CE. Unfortunately the reverse is still quite encrusted, and not much can be seen. The obverse is a bit better. After a while in peroxide the bust is pretty clear. Unfortunately, the VERY high relief on this coin does not let it lie flat on the bed of my scanner. So the lettering is a bit dark. And the face and beard of the emperor is a bit dark as well. I hope that you guys can make something of this. Any help IDing this bearded man would be appreciated!  Edited by Archraz

I can't make out the lettering from your scan. If you can read it in hand, provide the legend you can see. I'm sure we will be able to at least partially ID the coin. Personally, I think I'd let it soak some more. Try to patient. I know it is hard, but without a reverse it will be next to impossible to 100% attribute the coin.

Really can't make out much at this point, as JW said try soaking it for a while longer. Try useing 3% hydrogen peroxide been getting some good results from using it.

Yes, this is proving very frustrating since so much detail is present when in hand. I have had it in peroxide for the past week or so (after all, I was the guy who first proposed using it a few weeks ago). So here is what I can determine from the lettering: From about the 9 O'clock position to about 11 O'Clock it says "Save" and from about 1 O'clock it to about 3 O'Clock it says "II(?) USP." So it may say "...Saverus P..." Despite the "A" instead of an "E" I am beginning to suspect that this is Septimus Severus. The beard and overall facial features of other coins depicting him on Wildwinds seem similar. The reverse is VERY nebulous at this point, but I can make out what may be a standing figure with an arm stretched out towards the 9 O' Clock position. From the image that looks like "AV" at 10 o'clock. I just don't know from what I see and what you provided. Sorry I can't help more than this. Again, my suggestion is to let it soak a while longer.

Could the first part of the obverse text be 'CAESAR AVG' Aachraz?
The bit from 7-11 O'Clock - I have a hunch but this would need to fit, maybe in hand you can confirm or deny this.

Actually forget that - look for 'PIVS AVG' 9-11 O'Clock.

bobbyhelmet- Well it is pretty clear from about 9- 11 O'clock. It says "SAVE"
