I thought I would post this coin while Gallienus zoo (Gods and Heros) coins are being talked about. The Reverse legend is NEPTVNO CONS AVG Mint mark is N. But all the N's on this coin seem to look like III. the A's seem to look similar. II. The hippocamp is associated with Neptune which makes sense. There are many stories about Poseidon (Neptune) and chariots pulled across the sea by hippocamps.

Very nice - I was bidding on a Tetricus II hippocamp a few weeks ago (I didn't even know he had those on his coins) but it went above what I wanted to pay - I'm beginning to wish I'd gone a bit higher now. I definitely intend to get some of these Gallienus coins, I've been aware of the 'zoo' for a while but never made an effort to understand them which was a shame.
BTW - I narrowly missed out on a Hadrian Africa coin last week, another thread of yours I believe that added to my wish-list.
Just been reading about the 'N' meaning 50 but standing for workshop 9 due to the superstitious connotations of theta. I knew this happened but wonder why 'N' was chosen in this case.

Very nice and on my wish list. I, too, saw the Africa coin and made a bid but was too low. I'm beginning to have too many collections going at once. Like my son said, I need a collection manager.

I will keep my eye out for a Tetricus hippocamp. I have a little collection going with a couple of greeks also. They are hard to find inexpensively.
I've also been watching for the Hadrian Aegyptos and others after you made me aware of the travel series. They seem to always be a little pricey. I found two at a place for a fixed price but I don't know about that place museum surplus have you heard of it? I think I was pretty lucky on the Africa.
JW....I too have a few collections going at once.

I haven't bought a Gallienus for some years but felt I had to when I saw this one. Obv:-- GALLIENVS AVG, Radiate head left Rev:-- SAECVLARHS(sic) AVG, stag standing right; palm in exergue Minted in Antioch. A.D. 265. Not particularly rare but not common either especially with the left facing bust. Regards, Martin

That's a beauty.
I'm curious about the lines over the shoulder and zig zag down from the crown.
Are these described anywhere or just ribbons or something?

Very nice. I discovered a stag coin I had thrown in with coins to be attributed. But my stag coin is just the opposite of yours. Not just that your coin is beautiful and mine is, well, not so, but my stag is walking to the left and Gallienius is facing right.
Again, very nice coin for any collection.

I have cheated a little here as my coin isn't really from the zoo series. There is a stag in the zoo series "DIANAE CONS AVG" but mine refers to the secular games of A.D. 265. Regards, Martin

Ah ha. I see that now. I guess I was just thinking it was from the zoo series without looking at the legend. Still, a very nice coin.
