Last year I purchased a special set from the US Mint called "Collecting America's Coins: Beginner Basics". It's an educational set about mint production and coin collecting. Included was an unstruck planchet with upset rims, P&D circulating cents, P&D satin finish (mint set) dimes and a proof half dollar. These are all dated (save the planchet) 2005, the year of issue.
I noticed on the mint website that they are selling these this year. Does anyone know if the dates of the coins now are 2006, and if they will be selling it next year with 2007 dated coins, or whatever?
What drew me to the set was that the mint for the first time was selling planchets, what had hitherto been considered an error coin. We all know that the mint hadn't been in business to sell errors to the public previously. BTW -- earlier last year I received a set of a 2004 cent and a blank planchet in a sealed cello packet that was produced by the US Mint as a promotional item for children. It was handed out by ANA governor Patty Finner at a coin club meeting in Houston. The cent in that packet is pretty much flawless.

While I am not familiar with these sets, I think they are a great idea.

I would suggest contacting the Mint to find out the dates on these sets. It would stand to reason that they would now be 2006, but they may still have 2005 sets that didn't sell out.

I really have to second that. I think it's great for the Mint ot consider our younger citizens and the future of not only this hobby but of our country.

This will be bad news to anyone who paid big dollars to get a (rare) (error) blank planchet. It's good news for those who don't have one.

2005 dates on the coins ... interesting.
I suppose they will continue with the 2005 dates currently, even though we are in 2007, perhaps since they created a large stock initially.
But if that is the case, and say that the stock runs out this year, do you think they would still offer the sets (like annually), and if so would they move on to 2006 coins or to 2007?
Seems like it will be a minor mystery for a while, for some people.
