Please help identify this coin. I'm glad to be back to messing around with world coins. I took a double course load this semester so that I could finish and graduate this year. Between school and work there was barely any time for family in the last 5 months let alone coins. I bought a small ziplock bag of 150 coins yesterday and I got some really nice stuff. Here's one I couldn't find in my book last night, I thought it might be Ethiopian.

I would bet on Iran 5 Rials 1353 AH (1934-1935 AD) On https://www.(131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed I have found this pic: Not Allowed - Auto-Removed /countries/img2/90-1176.jpg) Looks similar. (Your obverse is posted upwards down:)

i cant read that language but the pic you'v just posted doesn't match the writing for the year on the other pic, so it could be 1976. echizento seems confident thats its 1976. then again I could be wrong.

I can't see the 1976 date in my book real well although it does look close. The date on the coin looks like a 1-backwards 7-herat shape-backwards 7. hope that gives a bit more detail.

In the pic I linked, it is a different date, that's for sure.
My comment on Frank's coins was according to the date I saw on it: 1353 with arabic numerials. Assuming that it was Hijri date it corresponds to 1934-35. Now with a little deeper research, I learned that Iranian use Jalali Calendar and 1353 corresponds to 1974-75 period.
This is all the result of my humble research. I would really like to learn from anyone more experienced with these coins.

You're pretty spot on, RenaL, though from the pic I can't be sure whether it's 1353 or 1352. Do the two "backward-7's" look identical, or does the second one look shorter?. Krause lists the coin (KM# 1176) as issued from 1347 (1968) through to 1357 (1978). It also lists "small date" and "large date" varieties for 1353 (1974); you'd have to see them side by side to tell which is which, I guess. No difference in value. One final point: the pic RenaL posted above is the later type, with yet another calendar the Iranians used: the year on that one is 2536 in the Persian Empire calendar, or 1977 AD. A Persian Empire calendar-dated coin has been on my wantlist for a while now.

I don't think they work even a nickle. They just good to keep. I can send you lots of them if you want to. Regards,
Nick

Yup, all Iranian. The left two are 2 rial coins; the dates are (I think) 1331 (1952 AD, left) and 2537 (1978 AD, right). The next one is an older one, silver, a 2000 dinars of AH1333 (1914 AD), or maybe 1332. The last one is a 10 rials of 1350 (1971AD). The date-numerals on some of those coins are hard to make out on the scans. If you want to look them up yourself, either grab a copy of the Krause world coin catalogue and look in the front (or sometimes the back) for the "standard interational numeral systems" table; the numbers used in Iran are called "Malay-Persian" in the table. If you don't have a Krause, check the examples shown in Wikipedia. The Iranian set is the second one (the Persian/Urdu variant) mentioned in that article. I'll have a go at pasting the digits here; it may not work on everyone's systems or browsers, but it seems to work on mine: #1776; = 0, #1777; = 1, #1778; = 2, #1779; = 3, #1780; = 4, #1781; = 5, #1782; = 6, #1783; = 7, #1784; = 8 and #1785; = 9.

thanks sap yet again, I'm finding it difficult to understand '#1776; = 0, #1777; = 1, #1778; = 2, #1779; = 3, #1780; = 4, #1781; = 5, #1782; = 6, #1783; = 7, #1784; = 8 and #1785; = 9', the numbers 0-9 refer to what? I must read up on it. btw, where can I buy one of these 'Krause world coin catalogue'? oh and sorry about the difficulty in reading the years in the scan, I have a stuffpy scanner. maybe I can improve its quality.

I'd be surprised if even a small coin dealer wouldn't know how to order a Krause catalogue in for you. Still, if nobody there has heard of it, there's always Amazon. There are currently five Krause volumes: one per century from 1600 to date. The one in the link there is the latest edition of the 20th century volume, the one you're most likely to need. If you can, grab a copy of the old 33rd edition (2006) - it was the last one to include both 20th and 21st centuries.
