My kids have a bunch of silver eagles that I or my father-in-law put in CoinWorld Premier coin slabs. Well, after a few months they've started toning around the edges (slight brownish)! Anyone know what might be doing this? I've been keeping them in NGC/PCGS boxes, and am wondering if the paper in the labels we've made may be doing this, or if anyone else has any ideas?

I agree with amida17. There seem to be an agressive acidic environment near or surrounding the slabs. The glue backing to the labels may be gassing out.

A temporary change in storage conditions may be indicated.

In the meantime, put some freshly minted common coins into the boxes and see what happens.

There is no glue in these labels, just card stock printed up. My air-tite stuff is, thus far, ok. Would it be worth moving the labels to the outside of the holders?

If there is little or no inconvenience to do so, move the labels on a temoorary basis or replace them with acid free paper. How long have the labels been inside? I have the inclination that plain labels however, are not the cause of your problem, if they have been included with the coins for only a short time.

Most types of paper are not entirely acid free. I would suggest that you use acid free paper in this case, anyway.

Most types of paper are bleached, and the chemicals used for bleaching are chlorine based. The chemistry of the toning on any coins exposed is therefore also chlorine related, and is black in color. Sulphur based silver compounds are also black in color.

Check that there are no other nasties in the immediate storage area that you use for your coins.

Here's what I have -

These coins have been in NGC or PCGS boxes with dessicants.

The "labels" were on a green card stock paper and printed with the information. They were cut to fit the little notches inside the holder in the green rubber.

I have some other coins with the "labels" that came with them and have not seen a problem.

I can put some 2-sided tape on the outside and stick the labels there, so hopefully will not come into any further contact. Moving them outside the holder is no problem for me.

I should *hope* the "labels" (all adhesive-free) that came with them are acid-free, but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had this issue.

I have about 50 coins (mostly proofs) in these Coin World premier holders. They have been in the holders for about 6 to 10 months now. I have one coin (modern silver proof) that has recently started to get a brown tone on the obverse. I was thinking that this was probably due to what was/is on the surface of the coin when I put it in the holder, and nothing to do with the holder/label.

I do have 1 BU silver eagle in this type of holder for about 10 months without any toning issue (there was a small amount of toning on the coin when I put it in the holder).

I am using Avery card stock to print labels for these. I have not used the supplied labels at this point. The coins are all stored in the Coin World boxes with silica gel in each box and then 2 boxes per 2 gallon ziploc with more silica gel in the ziploc.

Maybe a talk over the 'phone to the slabbers may help. Wait for this thread to mature a bit more, before making that call so a few more ideas can be input. If the reply is useful to the discussion in this thread, we would love to share what you find.

Sounds good. I did move the labels to the outside of the holders, figuring it can't hurt, but ANY further suggestions are appreciated.

I contacted Avery and the card stock I am using for the labels is indeed acid free. I am not too sure if many people on coincommunity use these holders. I posted a thread last year with zero responses..

Oh well, I like these holders. I can mix and match PCGS coins with raw ones I have in these holders and everything fits in the same coin case.

I keep each coin case of 25 slabs in a Ziploc bag with silica gel in the bag and also in the coin case. A micro environment that seems to be working well. From my observation, the environment is the most important factor to reduce toning. I really don't feel that these slabs are enabling toning.

This link should give you all you need to know on these holders:

MSDS sheets for the case and insert. "The insert is made of inert polythelene that is PVC-free and is similar to the insert ANACS uses in its certified coin holders."

I know what the problem is. It's not the paper. You have had a change of temperature. Your coins must of got cold and condensation affected your coins. Problem with Coin World holders are not air tight.
