my guess is that this might be an 1800 coin. It's probably been dipped though... given that nearly all of the top pop Cincy's from Denver are fully toned. Would be a wonderful example to have though if it looks great in hand. looks fully struck to me.

This 1936 d meets your pedigree requirements, PCGS 66, CAC approved and pure white. The close up photos do show some minor issues of contact on the jaw, hair around the ear as well as the high points of her skirt. All these and the minor mark above the word "Stephen" are unnoticeable from first glance. The only distraction to me would be the area next to the harp. I agree with the MS 66 grade and they do not come by this fine very often.

@muddler- I don't think I've seen a Cincy without those jaw marks. is that just annealing chatter from an incomplete strike?

When I posted the link, High-Res photos were not yet available. Just took a look at them now. Agreed that the cheek of Steven Foster shows some original planchet marks ... this is a sign of lack of full strike IMHO. Agree as well that the marks on the reverse field near the harp are a bit of a distraction ... and that is has probably been dipped. Appears to retain nice luster ... Quote:

Soooo ... this coin is now available for internet bids .. leading up to the Heritage floor auction date of March 8th. The sale of this coin will be an instructive event relative to the premium that educated buyers place on true premium quality coins. My estimate of full-retail value for an MS66 1936-D Cincinnati is $968 ... that estimate averages today's Greysheet (Ask), Numismedia FMV and PCGS Price Guide values. However ... this particular coin is not 'average' ... and will for sure be recognized as such by the Heritage clientele. I'm thinking that this lovely Cincinnati will hammer for over $2000 ... which causes me to carefully consider my strategy relative to needing to feed the family. No doubt the best example I've seen ... and the last coin needed to complete my basic type set ... so I will be an interested observer as the bids progress. 21 days to go ... current bid (not mine) is $900. David, it is the one, and the last one needed to complete your impressive set. Yes you will still up grade some of your commemoratives but you have been searching for an example of this quality for years, will another one come around?

No worries muddler ... you are of course correct in all you said above. I will be a factor in the auction ... just trying to decide where to draw the line on max bid I can stand for the coin. Once I become comfortable with that number ... I'll put it out there and see where the chips fall. BTW ... did you check out the MS66+/CAC Lincoln in this auction ... The auction for this Cincinnati is over ... final hammer price was $1500 ... make that $1725 total (plus shipping) with Heritage 15% buyers premium ... This coin sold for less than I thought it would ... approximately 1.8x the 'full retail value' of $968 that I stated above. Anyways .... winning bidder was yours truly.  Also purchased two other absolutely stunning (to my eye) classic silver commemorative upgrades in the same auction ... will save the stories on those coins for the photos when they all show up and I can evaluate in hand. It took me awhile to find an agreeable Cincinnati ... I'm looking forward to sharing my photos and evaluation when the coin shows up. David |

My search for the complete MS set has been an amazing journey of learning and joy ... and although this coin (once in hand) completes the set ...
