Had a road trip today and found a nice little coin shop. Found a couple of small items on my list including a 1999 Yellowstone NP.

My Grandson loves coins with buffalo's so he will get a kick out of this one.

Was it proof or BU? The buffalo side of this coin really is appealing.

This is a great coin that "some day" will bring a lot more money. There were only 23,614 UNC's minted which makes it the eighth lowest mintage of the Modern Silver UNC Commemoratives. They are still really inexpensive also (under $50) given the low numbers. I have fifteen of them now and climbing.... My son/grandson will appreciate it I'm sure..

As an aside, the other great buy these days is the Dolley Madison UNC. It goes for the low forties, is a beautiful coin designed by Tiffany & Co., and quoted by authoritative sources in even lower numbers sold (not minted) at 22,948.

PG, I think that the mintage numbers you are referring to do not include the coins in the "sets" My Yellowstone was purchased in a set (proof and Unc.) and I don't think they are reflected in the mintages you have.

Could be, but I would recommended reading "Profitable Coin Collecting" by former ANA President David Ganz. He's very hawkish on the Modern Commems and especially the UNC Dolley coin when it comes to long term investing.... PG

Problem with the Yellowstone, and I have one myself, is that's so plain and uninspiring. The obverse with its generic geiser isn't the stuff of numismatic legends- the buffalo was outdone two years later by the Buffalo Commemorative. I agree with those of you who like the low mintage figures- but 20,000+ needs to accompany an interesting motif.

I want to like this coin, but it's ugly. It's a horrible image of Old Faithful, and the bison on the reverse looks sickly, not majestic. Bleah! The 2010 quarter design is far superior.
