In the coin grading section, you'll find very few coins listed that are inexpensive, lower grade coins. Why is that? Is everyone that posts photos of their coins wealthy enough to buy only the very best? Is it that we like to impress others by showing how nice our own coins are? Is it because we don't have anyone "at home" that will be impressed with our finds? Is it because we fear letting too many people in our local area know what we have for fear of our homes being broken into, and our coins being stolen, or worse? I've been posting scans of my coins in the grading section for some time now (all but a few of them are well circulated) with the intention of getting help with my education in the art of grading coins, but I'm about to the point that I feel embarassed to post my poor pitiful coins - starting to feel like I, and my collection, won't measure up to the beautiful coins being posted by others here. Has anyone else felt like this, or am I becoming unbalanced? Ralph

IMHO, I think some of the folks here save up for quite a while to buy very nice coins, and in turn like to show the other members something that has excited them. I also think other coins are put there just for the grading practice, and they are coins that may have been in someone's collection for quite some time. I don't really mind, except for the fact that I am lost on MS coins. Below MS at least I can look at photograde and give an educated guess. Some may be "bragging", maybe not. But I like looking at the coins regardless.
Consider this as well, if Superdave breaks down and sells his Morgans in pursuit of a new venture in collecting, do you realize what kind of coins he could potentially buy with his ROI?

I really don't think its a matter of showing off. Most of my coins are circulated and I usually post them to get advice regarding the grade and whether its a problem coin or not. I'm still having difficulty identifying some cleaned coins and new to grading so the comments really help.

I'm going to double my money, probably, but all told that won't exceed $2500 for the lot. My theory is twofold, Ralph. Half of it is, the poster is as much bragging as asking for grades. I do it too. The other half is, differentiating between MS grades is much more difficult than circulated grades. You yourself are proof of the circulated learning process - starting from scratch a few months ago, you are now a competent circulated coin grader in the issues you're familiar with. So, the poster isn't sure of his/her MS grade, and needs reinforcement. Circulated grading has similarities across issues, and can be learned in major part by book. Uncirculated grading changes with each coin you hold, and can only be learned through experience.

I think everyone likes showing off their new coins be it circ or uncirc. I really enjoy sharing anything new I might get, as much as I like looking at everyone elses new stuff. Thats the whole point with the forum isn't it? Sharing with people of like interest? Sometimes I don't comment on a new coin someone picks up because I just don't have a comment, from either lack of knowledge or whatever else. But I try to pipe in whenever I can. I love show offs....cause I enjoy looking at their coins

I just sold 2 high priced coins so I could fund some purchases that I needed for another set. I myself just do not like circulated coins, I think they are ugly (except for a few of them like the bust halves). I am on a fixed income and am by no means rich, I just have everything paid for that I own which includes quite a few classic muscle cars not only coins. Instead of making a quick purchase of a well circulated coin I will save up or sell another coin and buy a uncirculated one in its place, so the reason I never post any circulated coins is because well I just don't have any. If I did you can rest assured I would post them with the same amount of pride and enthusiasm that I do my uncirculated coins

No deep pockets here. In fact, I only add about a coin a year to my collection. The grading section is strongest if all types of coins, ms or circulated, are posted. Please keep putting your coins up Ralph, we enjoy seeing them and attemting to grade 'em.

Couldn't have said it better, and I wish I'd said it myself. It helps *everyone* for the greatest-possible variety of coins to be posted in the Grading thread - if you look, you'll note that "reads" outnumber "posts" in most threads by at least 5 to 1. Many more people benefit from grading threads than just the ones who post in them.

Hardly. I'm just a YN on an allowance, with the occasional pet sitting job. I have a small reserve of money set aside in case a special coin comes along, or for buying those coins that I know I can flip for more money to buy coins with. Usually, most of my coins come from major shows and internet bidding for auctions of major shows. I'm lucky enough to have the Whitman Atlanta show every year really close to my home, and I can get some great coins there. I have also sold/traded off some of my coins for new ones. I've come to the realization that most coin collectors are broke. After all, a lot of great sets are being sold so that the owners can buy the real "monster" coins (I can think of one saint set in particular).

A lot of the coins I post are ones I buy to resell.I cannot afford to keep a lot of them myself and the small profit I make off of some helps me to buy the coins I can afford. I like to get others opinions on the coins before selling as it sometimes helps me to list with a fair grade. If there is a coin I really want bad, then I will sell another of mine to get it.

I like to share with the CCF so as to inspire others or for an occasional grading. I think there's a little part of all of us that like to show off something that we enjoy and know that others here enjoy also. Nope, no deep pockets here either just careful collecting and shopping around and the pure enjoyment of being a Numismatist and investor.

Personally not rich here either. My whole coin budget comes from the fact that the money I used to spend on cigarettes now goes to purchasing coins. I am getting down to the last 5-7 Franklins I need and I am going to have to not buy anything for a couple of paydays to save up to get those. It will probably take me the rest of this year to finish that set. I like to get opinions on coins by posting them for grades. Lots of times though they are pics I snagged off of ebay so I can get an opinion from others before I make a decision to buy or not. I don't post many but enjoy giving a grading when I can, that is how I learn. To me the people posting the nice coins are fellow collectors and I don't begrudge them their 15 minutes of fame. The majority of my coins are well circulated except for the Franklins. I don't mind seeing the nice MS of other types that people post either though.

Not rich either... maybe someday! I have enough money to buy a few coins here or there, but there are no millions sitting in the bank account! I don't post any coins in the coin grading section personally just because I am too lazy to take pictures! Thundercoin

As for me, I not bothered one way of the other what people think of my collections I have many circulated sets. I have done a lot of roll searching to get my sets and have worked hard to get the un-circulated ones but there mine and I enjoy them very much. I think most people show what they are most proud of in there collection and they just want to share with us what they have worked hard to get, and I truly believe they mean well. Bruce.

Ralph, like everyone, I have coins in all grades. Like TLS, I work the yard sales and auctions hard buying coins and turning them over to allow me to buy better coins I would like to keep. As soon as I figure how to take decent pics and post them you are going to see some of the ugliest coins on earth and I am still proud of them. So, don't let the great coins you see posted bother you, those beautiful high grade coins are a small part of the collections they are in. Put em up, man, and lets start grading. Jim
