Hi guys,

I would just like to have a small collection of about 20 assorted Precious metal (silver, gold, platinum & palladium)coins.

I currently have a few (all silver) such as australian dragon, silver maple, kokaburra & canadian cougar.

There really is no support for any kind of PM coin collecting out here and it has taken me months and months just to get these.

I would appreciate it a lot if you could advise me which vendors to purchase a few more from, vendors with low premiums since I don't want any "special" or old coins, just a few pieces to put a way & bring out on occassions.

I had the following in mind, but due to prices, I'd prefer to stick to silver:

krugerrand
US Eagle (1 silver, 1 platinum, 1 palladium)
CA Maple (1 platinum, 1 palladium, maybe 1 day 1 gold)
AU any silver

Would prefer 1 Oz but for gold would look at 1/4 or less.

Also, is it safe to ship these within the US? do all the online vendors use registered mail by default or should we stick to DHL/FEDEX/UPS (will these even replace lost or stolen coins)?

I'd appreciate any way you could help.

Thanks.

Recently I too started acquiring different silver bullion issues. I have made a few purchases from APMEX and was very pleased with the selection, pricing and packaging of their shipments. You will have to check with them as to the cost of shipping to the U.A.E. Good luck in adding to your collection. http://www.apmex.com/Category/503/Silver.aspx

If you're looking for Platinum coins, you may want to consider the Australian Platypus. Goldmart.com has them at a relatively low premium of only $79 over spot. I bought one last year and am very happy with it.

Welcome darth. I dont usually buy from too many vendors due to shipping. Since I only get one coin here and there, when you add the shipping, you pay too much. That is for me. The sites that these guys have given you I also have heard good things about and If you were to be buying a handful at a time, I think they will be good sites to get them from. They usually do have tracking and insurance on their packages so yes....they will be safe. If you are only looking to add a coin here and there as well....I use the " ebay" I dont have any local coin shops around or near me so to add is darn difficult. I also live in canada and most of the online vendors are in the states which jacks up my shipping costs. So the bay lets me get what I'm looking for and if they are for investment...you can usually pick up a lot of 10 for about $4 average if you find the right deal. I have bought around 35 silver coins on the bay and Havent had a problem with shipping or packaging yet. ***Knock on wood*** Hope this helps a bit. CHEERS!

Unless they are shipping high value amounts most of the companies will probably ship Priority insured. It is moderately safe but if it is lost or stolen insurance covers it (They may also just self insure.) For high values they may do Registered because it is safer and cheaper. DHL/FedEx/and UPS will ship, but if something go wrong you are out of luck. They will not insure coins, not even collectible coins.

If you stick around here for a little while you'll see several individuals from all sorts of countries and places. Regarding your request though, I suggest you wait until you get the 250 posts and start purchasing coins and/or almost anything from CCF members. There are numerous web sites and other places you could buy things from but as a general rule, not a guaratee though, members here are just coin collectors and/or dealers. Most would be rather on the wanting to help you in your hobby not take advantage of you.
In addition to the possible great deals on what your looking for, you could actually find out as much as possible about such items right here.

I buy my PMs from places like APMEX and pay with money orders. As for shipping costs? It ends up being cheaper than sales tax at my local shop. I don't buy my PMs one coin at a time, but ten to twenty at a time to minimize that premium and shipping. With sales tax that premium just continues to increase with each coin purchased, bought individually or in bulk.

Not sure what you mean about not any support out there for PM collecting as their are many metal dealers out there and tons of resources. I personally buy PMs for investment only and have no top end on the number I want to keep. I add to my collection monthly and let the market movements eventually eat up the premiums I paid. When the silver to gold ratio closes I trade upand continue to add. When the market drops I hold what I got and buy as much as I can.

I also keep track of the price I paid for each and every coin I have so if I need to get a pay out on some for cash in an emergency I know exactly what I made or lost in the sale. If I were going to buy some bullion for a collection I would probably opt for coins that are in short lived series or that have historically shown great returns. Just my $0.02
