Good Afternoon,

I have a question about the coin dealers featured in Coin World magazine. Are they any good? Are they reputable? I personally prefer to buy my coins from dealers I meet face to face and have established a relationship with. I have had varying degrees of success in doing this. I'm not opposed to buying sight unseen, I have bought from ebay before with great success, but when buying "through the mail," in my experience, I end up paying more due to added shipping costs. I'm willing to pay a few dollars more from a brick and mortar shop because I know they have overhead but typically I stick to the same dealers from my coin club or local coin shows.

What is your opinion?

It is hit and miss, some are certainly much better than others. A couple good ones that come to mind are Miller's Mint and Jack Beymer. You are usually ok when ordering a specific item but when you get something like "GEM BU Morgan, date of our choice", you run the risk of ending up with a slider or a cleaned coin. You didn't mention any specific dealers but I will mention one- Coast to Coast Coin. Avoid them like the plague, Ken Pines was booted from the ANA several years ago for refusing to respond to multiple complaints regarding seriously overgraded and altered(cleaned, whizzed, tooled, etc) coins.
Rest in Peace

And our own Coppercoins works at Modern Coin Mart. On his recommendation I would be more than comfortable buying from them.
