Hello,
My Dad bought this piece at a show maybe 40 years ago and just dug it out of his drawer. According to the label it is from Valentinian I and is dated about 370 AD. It is a small piece, about dime-size with a weight of 2.79 grams. I can't really read any of the obverse inscriptions due to strike, wear, and/or corrosion. The reverse seems to read in part "GLORIA" and "BSISC".

What would you call this piece in terms of denomination? What are your thoughts on identification, quality, and potential value? Thanks!

Hi Jaobler,

This looks like it is indeed Valentinian I.

RIC IX 14a type xix struck at Siscia mint

Obverse: D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right

Reverse: GLORIA RO-MANORVM, Emperor dragging captive with right, labarum (chi-rho standard) in left, M in left field, * over P over dot in right field, BSISC in exergue

Late empire coins seem to be hard to find in good condition. I would say in this condition, your coin may sell for $10 to $20 US.

I like the reverse, it shows nice detail.

Regards,

-Kurt
