Usually when I see adds in the coupon section of the newspaper on coins I'm skeptical and most often they aren't a deal. Just came across an offer from this company for a "1881 Uncirculated Morgan dollar" for 37.50. Any comments, or concerns? Thanks, Teena

Pretty sure you'd do much better through a local coin shop. 1881 is a common date and I doubt this offering is uncirculated ... even though it is advertised as such. These folks make their money offering AU or problem coins as unc.

It seems like so many sellers are representing cleaned or altered coins as AU or better. It's too bad they can get away with this kind of behavior. Often they use pics that are poorly lighted or out of focus. Buyer beware!

Definitely don't buy from them. Companies like that have no clue on how to grade. Like others have said, they are probably selling AU/sliders for the BU price.

I have also found an add in the coupon section. The add is for a subscription of uncirculated Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars for $85 + $4.95 shipping. The silver will be sent very other month. A storage chest is included. The company is PCS Coin and Stamp. After reviewing a host of complaints, I checked the BBB which shows PCS is a member without rating. No negative or positive reviews. I am new to coin collecting and need some advice whether or not this would be a good way to start. I would also like to hear about your experiences with PCS. Thanks

Don't. $85 is way too much for many "Uncirculated" Morgans, and you gotta know those are the ones you're going to get. How do you suppose they're paying for the advertising and boxes?

Good to have you hear first off. As far as This Company and how you deal with them is really about "what kind of shape are you in" 1st) If you are Young I would tell you to Run Really Really FAST!! 2nd) If you are a bit Older "Jog at a double time" 3rd) If you are Dead Crawl or drift as fast as possible away! I have yet to talk with anyone that was happy with the "deal" they thought they got ...once they became a bit more knowledgeable with coins and metals. Once they realized what they did wrong ...well the damage was done!

Thank you very much for your advice. Since I am very old I think I will just "ooze" away.

PCS Stamps and Coins was formerly Postal Commemorative Society. Part of MBI who also has Danbury Mint and Easton Press. They are a great company (still offering some of the same programs that started the business in 1970). I collect the first day covers. I just like them and would not be concerned with resale. I even get my name printed on them because I plan to be the owner. They also develop exclsuive products like medals, replica coins of a higher quality than places like Nat. Collector's Mint. Danbury makes some very fine Christmas Ornaments that have been popular for decades. With that said..their packaged programs of historic US coins are just that...coffee table type programs for the person who wants a pretty collection to show the kids. Is it a rip-off? No..you are paying a normal retail markup to a company with great customer service who will accept returns (post paid) and replace defects. These products are not intended to be investments and they are not claimed to be. There are also exonumia collectors who will actively purchase specific older issues from this company. I had a 1970s Danbury Mint medal collection and sold it on ebay with lots of interest a year or so back.

I was going to take you to task for resurrecting an old thread, but your comments are so on-point that I'm just going to bump it instead.
