I was examining a 1894 O VF Morgan dollar I picked up yesterday (for a really cheap price), and in examining it I noticed that the mint mark was off-center and tilted a little. Was that a common mistake, or does it affect the value?

It is in a very similar position to the one in the picture in the webpage here with the grid discussing mintmark orientation:

Check out VAMworld although their photos are a bit lacking for the '94-O mint mark. It is very common for all date/ mint marks to be all over the map. Rarity depends on known populations.

It appears to be a 1894-O VAM-8 Far Date, O Tilted Right.
The VAM-2 is also an O Tilted Right, however I used their "attributation 101" guide and saw that it had four denticles before the number one, so that made it a VAM-8
Wow, thanks for that link. That was the first time I ever checked for a VAM on one of my Morgans before. I'm not really familiar with them.
I wish I had a camera handy so I could post a pic. Maybe I'll get that done later.
Rest in Peace

Welcome to VAMming robfromshasta. Morgans and Peace dollars are much more than just date/mint marks. Enjoy the hunt!

Great. Now I have to go through all my Morgans and Peace dollars and check them all out LOL.

Time to get a good closeup camera and something with powerful magnification, at least better than my 3x Magnifying Lens...

Thanks. I am pretty excited about attributing my first VAM, even though I am still tyring to figure it out for sure. I feel bad I cant get a picture for you guys yet, but I will get it done.

I was pretty happy to get a VF 1894-O for a good price in the first place, to find out its likely a VAM-8 is even better. I wish VAMworld had a picture of it, but it's one of those they don't have a picture of yet. That makes me want to get a picture of it so I can submit it even more.

I searched online quite a bit for a picture to compare it to, so I can know for sure and get a value at the same time, but I haven't had any luck. I'm sure its not a super valuable coin, but at least I feel comfortable that the $40 I paid for it was well worth it.

Your welcome. By the way, I am by no means a VAM guy. I wouldn't know the first thing about them. I just know there are many with some being quite rare.
