I have an 1888P Morgan. The coin suffers from numerous bag marks on the obverse but still shows some luster. The reverse eagle has more than average wear on its chest (VAM39A ?). Is this due to a worn reverse die? This coin does not match any other VAM's. Any ideas or opinions? It does not appear to have a doubled ear and I don't know about the slanted date. Way too much detail everywhere but the chest. Thanks for the help.

Is that a die chip on the lower left loop of the second 8?

dave700x,

The second 8 has a little tiny tail like a curved tail on a Q only this tail points towards the 1. Is this a die chip? If so, then yes, there is a die chip on the lower left loop of the second 8.
Rest in Peace

Look at VAM4A and see if it matches that. I'm not sure if there are other VAMs with the die chip(s) on the date.

It does not match any of the VAMS listed. The closest one is the VAM39A and its worn reverse die. Here is a tighter shot of the date. I can try to list it over on the VAM site. Maybe I have another VAM variation?

This is very frustrating. God Vam-it.
The X'd out arrow on the far right was were I thought there was another die chip. It turned out to be a piece of foreign matter. Maybe a potato chip, but no die chip. The one under the second 8 is good.

Looking on VAMworld, the die chip is on the first 8 on the VAM4...mds308's coin is on the second 8.
Just my NOOB opinion.

Maybe it's the 'normal die' variation? My only question is how does the breast wear down and not the rest of the coin. This is why I was speculating on a worn reverse die VAM39A. The coin does NOT match any of the VAM4A criteria. I've already put the coin back in the bank vault. No sense losing any sleep over it. Thanks for all your opinions and help.

It is pretty typical to have a weak center struck 88o. Not sure exactly why they have that issue. One explanation I heard was that they reduced the pressure to prolong the die life.
