I picked up this Morgan at my local coin shop about a month ago. When I got home I looked at it with a loupe and noticed that the date and a few of the stars on the left appeared to be doubled. There are also die cracks that run around some of the stars and lettering on both the obverse and reverse. It also appears to have die scratches (or cleaning?) in the fields. When I tilt the coin in the light it has a golden blue tone to it. At first I thought that it was something other than toning but I'm still not sure. It almost appears like a gold rust. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. If any particular VAM stands out that would be appreciated too. I've looked a little on VAMWorld and will continue to do so. I enjoy looking at it and since I only have a little over spot into it I guess I'm happier now than when I left the store. Thanks for looking!

VAM-1AU. Note the big die scratch between the NE of ONE. These aren't common.

I just compared it to VAMworld and you nailed it SsuperDdave! Based on its condition would there be any added value with it being a VAM-1AU?

Now that I'm thinking about it, what's going on with the doubling under the date and stars? Is it die deteriation doubling from die wear?

Is it doubling, or just relief from toning? Untoned areas in those places are to be expected; the striking process leaves metal harder in some places than others, and less likely to tone.

The coloring on your coin strikes me as odd, but I'm not ready to call it artificial. 1921's do very odd things with toning.

This is the best I could do tonight but tired eyes and a bad picture aren't helping. I'll try again tomorrow with some fresh eyes and better lighting.

I think I have good enough pictures to confirm that the doubling is actually just relief from toning as SsuperDdave said. At least she has a name now (1921-D VAM-1AU) so she can be put with her friends. Thanks for your help SsuperDdave!

I dunno. The edges seem kind of sharply-defined - as if there's something raised there - but it might be the images. This sort of doubling is very common with 1921's (in truth, *most* have some sort of doubling), but not at that distance from the original. The process which causes that doubling doesn't really allow for such a large offset.

Yeah, we can all this one set to rest, I think. What you got next?
