I just acquired this Crispus AE3 RIC VII 129 struck at Arles in 317 AD. It caught my attention because of the reverse and the sand patina. I hadn't seen this reverse with the mintmark QARL. The price was right so now it is part of my collection: OBV: CRISPVS NOB CAES, Laureate draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind REV: PRINCIPIA IVVENTVTIS, Mars, naked except for helmet and boots, chlamys flying out behind, advancing right holding transverse spear and shield. R-S across fields, QARL in ex.

Very cool reverse
=> it looks like Mars is moving very quickly, or there is a very strong wind (either way, super-cool reverse)

I hunt for coins all the time. I especially look for coins that are different in some way or another from what I see all the time. I have said this before, but the hunt is part of the fun IMHO. As I said, in this case the reverse is not something I have seen often. Also, I was in Arles, France two years ago for a few days. I remember the very nice Roman ruins of a coliseum and baths, but the town was not much to write home about. I remember it as dirty and crowded. Of course, the weather was cold and very windy and that may play a part in my memories of Arles. Anyway, I like to have coins from the places I have visited.

The coin travelled a long way from Arles to get that sand patina.
