When someone claims to have an 1883/2 the first thing I look at is does it have an 1883 date logotype? The digits on the 1883 logotype punch were spaced significantly further apart than they are on the 1882 and earlier punches. They almost look like there is enough space to put another digit between each of them.
Date on 1882

Date on 1883
notice how much further apart the digits are, especially the 8 and 3. If you don't see that kind of spacing you know automatically it can't be a 3/2.
Great site for learning more about the 1883/2 nickels, all five varieties.
