I reported this crude copy to ebay three days ago. Looks like the sale is about to close ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/30075547369...t_500wt_1089

I suspect that the word COPY was scratched from within the shield where the word CENTS appears on original coins.

I've always thought that if there was a fake item that wasn't taken off before it sold, that I would kindly contact the buyer after either the seller or the buyer had left feedback and see if they realized that it was counterfeit. I have yet to track and follow up on any though. Maybe you could do that here?

Way to much effort to track down anything that slips through like that.

Im not familiar with this series at all what was the tip off it was fake? Too good of a condition or is the design wrong?

The lettering in the legend is the wrong style. It has the appearance of having been a cast piece. The crudeness of this copy, coupled with the poorly distressed planchet gives it an aged appearance that's deceptive to those unfamiliar with this colonial coin.

On occasion, I have contacted successful bidders with a word of caution, but it's rare to be acknowledged, much less thanked. Generally speaking, folks don't much welcome any news that they've been deceived or else used poor judgment in making a purchase ...

I just checked the photos at a zoom level of 400% and see no trace of any scratching on the coin, and maybe that is why ebay let the auction proceed...

Very interesting thanks for the info. I assume this is probably a fairly common way of faking these?

Why anyone would drop $73 on such crummy photos is beyond me.
