I posted this coin awhile ago, but I wanted to open up discussion about population of this variety and comparison to the 1858/ 8/5 variety. I have observed it seems very difficult to find a marker and the 1858/ 8/5 relatively easy to find. I am wondering is it because the marker is a new discovery compared to the 8/5. I have been aware of the 8/5 for years and only knew about the marker when looking through a recent Charltons. I am interested if any forum members have an example in their collection and if so could you share grade and how hard or easy it was to acquire. Thanks for sharing Edited by collector67 12/05/2012 2:55 pm

Yeh I think it's a hole in alot of collections guess that's why it's not listed in trends as there are no sales to track. I would say Charltons is very low in their values for this coin.

By the lack response I'll have to assume the are no other members ( with the exception of zonad) have one of these in their collection. This variety is very underrated and appears to have a very low population. Defiantly 1 die , then consider the marker was used to align the dies and then polished off. I am thinking there are maybe less then 100 or much lower.

LOL I will hold onto what I have for awhile. I was talking to a dealer , he said he has not had one ever longtime dealer high end stuff. Another 50 years plus dealing never heard of the variety. I think it will take a few years for it to take off or not I am willing to hold onto mine until then. I think they should in the same league of the 5/8 1858 1893 RT, time will tell.

I keep my eyes open for that one. I have not had a chance to read the CCN article. Which issue is the article in?

The EF45 on ebay had no offers at $1500 BIN,and no bidders at $1000 start auction.A VG example sold for about $100.The EF 45 may sell at about $600.

Well I thought I would bump this post up, since I picked up another low grade example of this variety. Anyone else have any to post a picture of. I am thinking the number of these is well under 100 most likely under 50.

First appeared in Charlton in 2011?
I don't think its well enough known to make conclusions.
Like the 1858 large 5c/5.
Anyone else think about the amazing number of different types of varieties for 1858/1859?
