My second Ostrogothic coin, a Felix Ravenna decanummium. Got this one for a great price as well. This type was minted during the reign of Theodoric the Great (reigned in Italy 493-526 AD), who was determined to make the Ostrogothic capital of Ravenna a large and influential city on the same level as that of Constantinople and Rome. King Theodoric, even though he was a barbarian, greatly admired and valued Roman culture, and sought to preserve it. The monogram on this type represents the city of Ravenna and includes the letters R, V, E, and N. Obv: FELIX R-AVENNA, turreted head of Ravenna right Rev: Monogram of Ravenna within wreath, cross above, X below, Rome mint COI 78b Seller's scans (not in hand yet) Here is a clear illustration of the monogram: Edited by VisigothKing 03/13/2013 4:55 pm

Another great addition! The dark ages for poor west Rome.
These guys are so teensy. How big is this one?

It's a decanummium so should be in the 15-17 mm range. The Ostrogoths put a little more meat into their bronze coins than the Romans before them did

Woah! Thats huge! Mustve dwarfed the circulating Roman coins. And a clear monogram. I wonder how many of these are found and thrown into culls piles? Its not the classic mini-minim size, after all!

Quote: I wonder how many of these are found and thrown into culls piles? And yet I can'tt find these at cull prices Quote: Mustve dwarfed the circulating Roman coins. Yes but they still came up pretty short compared to those Byzantine folles that were circulating just east to the Ostrogoths

Thanks ben. Yeah, it is a bit chunky in hand, esp for a coin of its size.
