I have a 1982 and a 1982(D) Lincoln cents and have used the Red Book (thank you to Susan for that) and scales to work out the difference in weights between copper and copper plated. Using this I know my 1982 is copper and the 1982(D) is copper plated.
Now my problem is, in the copper plated there are two different Krause numbers. I don't have a Krause book at the moment and the website doesn't give enough info for me to know the difference between a KM#201a and a KM#201b. So could someone advise me which this coin is, please.

Odd, but here is what the 2005 Krause lists.

KM#201a = Copper Plated Zinc (1982 P and D, large :nd small dates)
KM#201b = Copper Plated Zinc (1983 - present, but including the 1982S for some odd reason)

I'll be darned if I can figure out why they listed them like that.

That certainly is strange, but thank you for the quick reply.

If the 82-D is copper plated zinc it is KM# 201A Large date .

the 1982-S is listed with the plated cents 201-B because it is a plated cent and was not included in the transitional 82 Business strike cents ,,first year of the proof cents that were copper plated zinc.

Thanks Metalman. That will certainly help me determine large dates and small dates from all the 1982's that I've been saving up.

I don't know why the 1982-S would be listed with the 1983 - copper plated zinc coins. I would assume it is an error on Krause's part because Metalman is wrong, the 1982-S proof was made of copper. It was the last of the copper proofs. The first of the plated proof cents was the 83-S.

The reason for the 201a and 201b numbers is beacuse in 1982 the cents were pure copper plated on a pure zinc core. But they had problems with the copper plating adhering to the zinc so in 1983 they changed the composition of the core slightly alloying the zinc with a tiny amount of copper. That allowed the plating to "grab" better and greatly reduced the incidence of plating bubbles. For 1983 - the core was 99.2 percent zinc and .8 percent copper.

Conder is right,, the 82-S was a copper cent ,, I should have checked further into the Krause catalog with other references .

I just checked with my weights list and see that I have it listed as a copper weight .

sorry about the error !!
